Triple chorus pad

Post by Mr_-G- »

The other day we discussed about the "triple chorus" effect that is quite distinctive and used in many vintage string machines.
Out of curiosity I set to implement the effect in a soft-synth, based on the descriptions in the web. Here is what I came up with:
tripleChorus.jpg

The effect uses 3 delay lines phased at 120 degrees from each other, which are then modulated by 2 LFOs one at about 0.6Hz (which gives the chorus effect with that typical buzzing) and the other at 6Hz which gives a kind of vibrato on top of the chorusing.
I thought it sounded very good, so I made some samples by feeding a sawtooth wave and setting a strong effect depth:

and another set using two sawtooth waves one octave apart, with less effect depth:

The samples played above were filtered at 565Hz with the LP12 filter of the synth section of the NS2 (they are quite bright), set the velocity to control the filter frequency, and added some reverb. No other effects.
Enjoy!

Nicely done Mr_G  which "softsynth" have you used (something like MaxMsp)?

Thanks. Done with SynC Modular. http://www.sync-modular.org/
It has been discontinued, though. It should be possible to replicate it in most soft synth platforms as it does not contain anything too complicated. Maybe there are better/more efficient ways of implementing this.

Most of the diagram is to generate the 120 degrees shifted phase of the 3 delay lines controlled by the 2 LFOs. I found it interesting how different the effect is from the traditional chorus.
I wonder if the A1 exploits a similar ensemble effect and that is what it makes it sound like many analog string synths.
