Luigi's Mansion (Nintendo GameCube) Synth Sounds

Post by mja09006 »

Hi All,

Just got the Nord Electro 4HP and love it dearly. I have been wanting to find a specific synth lead from the video game Luigi's Mansion for the Nintendo GC. You can hear it in this video:

It's playing the main melody there, sounds eerie and voice-like. I've been researching a lot, no one has ever replicated it online and it's a really awesome lead sound. One source irl said it was an oberheim but I'm still not sure. This video seems to sound closer to what the synth from the game is like but still I'm not sure:

I'm not as experienced with synths as I am with bass guitar and organ so if anyone thinks they could help out with finding this sound that'd be amazing.

Thanks,

They sound different to my ears. The Luigi's seems to be a low pass filtered pulse wave (in the NS2 synth you can control the pulse width with the SHAPE oscillator parameter to make it sound 'nasal') with a delayed vibrato played in mono-legato mode and some "glide" value > 0. The amp EG has a long attack and short release.

The lead sound in the oberheim sounds a bit like the solo in ELP's "From the beguinning". I think it is a triangular wave also in mono-legato mode (and glide parameter), but has no vibrato and shorter attack.

You might struggle to get an NE to reproduce these sounds via an nsmp file because a synth section is needed to do the "glide" part.

ok interesting i'm going to try that sound you described and see if it can work, I may try through an instrument plugin on Pro Tools since I don't have an actual synth myself but I know what you mean about struggling to get the glide part from the nsmp especially since the electro 4 has no pitch bend. I may just have it sample back a pre recorded melody on the original synth w/ the glide or I may eventually just get a synth.

The Luigi sound seems like an attempt to recreate that Theremin sound from the old horror movies, but I don't think it is played on a real theremin. But it could be based on a sampled one. Don't know if this helped, but maybe it will give you some more input in what to look for.

Thanks for the help, I thought that as well that it sounded like a theremin. I think the biggest challenge with working with that synth tone is replicating it as an nmsp. file
