dj, I had a look at the Ashly specs, but I can't see how I could achieve inputting an aux signal from the main desk, and routing that to the Ashly's headphone output, without sending it to the Ashly's main outs. Is it doable?

I just checked the manual and I think you may be right. Not sure if the front panel input to channel 8 goes to the main mix bus, or just the headphones-

There is something wrong with the diagram from the initial post.....I don't see the MIX coming from the FOH to your Mixer/snake.

Most of the mixers will not allow you to get a MIX feed from the front of house unless you use an RCA stereo pair into your AUX Input or get a feed into one of your LINE channels and then mix into your headphones from the mixer.

I have owned Behringer Xenyx in the past, and now use the Mackie 802VLZ4. (With two Nords, a Roland sampler and a Moog Minitaur)
The Behringer are just fine, but the hardware quality will deteriorate faster if you use them a lot. I don't like the power unit, especially the plug thats going into the Behringer. It's vulnerable.

I use the Mackie since a year now, and in my experience the sound quality is better, more honest.
The hardware can take a beating, the power plug is sturdy. I use channel one for in-ear monitoring, this works brilliant. I don't have to use a separate IEM device.

There are a lot of good quality mixers, but the flexibility, quality of this mixer is superb. And having a spare channel gives the opportunity to use an extra keyboard/expander or whatever.

Thanks all for your responses. Now I have a list of possibilities to salivate over for the medium term. But as a short term hack to live with my existing Mackie 402, I followed ajstan's suggestion and picked up an MA400 today. Very simple, very elegant solution, does exactly what I need (at least in my man cave). I'll test it out with the band on Sunday and let you know.

This is exactly what I do...Aux 4 from our Mackie Onyx goes into effect one spare channel of my Tascam mixer so, when the venue doesn't have enough wedges - which is usually the case as they don't think too much about any keys player - I can feed in the vocals only....into my own monitors....And as I sent a different out put to the FOH, no feedback or what so ever....

Yeah, I guess there is one line missing on that pic, the aux signal from the main mixer to the snake. But using an RCA stereo input on the sub mixer, to take the mono aux signal from the main mixer, was exactly the dilemma with the Mackie 402. ajstan's lil toy fits the bill nicely for now, and gives me a couple of ways I can route things to control my own monitor signal (whether using headphones or a wedge). It will work for now until I decide whether to put together a small 19" rack or go with something like the Mackie 802 or a Behringer Xenyx. I'm trying to keep my rig as simple as possible, but I keep adding new boxes!

I also use the Tascam LM-8ST...

Fits into an rack and is very simple to use: ST1 mix to FOH and ST2 Mix to IEM.
This way I get a a monitor mix from the main mixer at Ch1/2 with all band members except myself that goes only to IEM (ST2) and my own instruments on the other channels that go as stereo submix to FOH (ST1) and to IEM (ST2) at the same time.

Cheers

Question for those using 19" mixers, what other goodies do you have in your rack? (to help me justify going that direction)

I've done the same but no IEM, so, enough guitar and Drums all over the place then, just vocals for me....But yes, the sound is awesome, no buzz or hum....I even have two Tascam linked because my rig needs more than 8 channels, see answer below....

Rack 8U:
MX200 Lexicon Reverb for the Matrix 1000
EMU Proteus
Matrix 1000 number one
Matrix 1000 number two
Roland XV5080
Roland Midi Patchbay A880
Tascam Mixer LM-8ST: ch1/Stage 2, Ch2/D50, Ch3/NLEX, Ch4/Matrix 1000 1&2, Ch5/Proteus 2000, Ch6/XV5080, Ch7/Nord C2, Ch8/DSI Prophet 08

Rack 6U on top of the 8U:
TC Helicon Voice Live Rack
Yamaha TX802
TC Electronic M-One XL (For effects on the TX802 and the Prophet 12, connected to the second Tascam below)
Tascam LM-8ST number 2

LM-8ST number 2 out 1 goes to input 1&2 of the Tascam number then, feed both my monitor and the FOH...And out 2 of the Tascam number 2 is used as a send to feed the TC M-One XL, return in the main bus in.

In this second rack, I plug into the Tascam:
Ch1: Ipad
Ch2: Waldorf Streichfett
ch3: Roland Keytar AX Synth
Ch4: Stage 2 Outputs 3&4
Ch5: TX802
Ch6: Prophet 12
Ch7: return of vocals from the FOH via an Aux send
Ch8: TC Helicon Voice Live out

So, there is quite a lot to do when you go the rackmounted route!!!!
