Nord 3P / slave Midi connection with octatrack

Postby samcamelia » 06 Oct 2017, 17:18

Hi there !

I'm new here, thank you in advance for the help I might get !
Here is my problem : I connected my nord 3P midi input to the midi output of the octatrack. The octatrack is a sampling machine which can send midi notes on a specific channel. There are 8 individual tracks that can send midi notes or CC on a dedicated midi channel.
I recorded a note sequence on the octatrack on a track which sends midi notes to channel 10, and only to this channel.
The 3P kit parameters are the following :
- pads 1 to 6 all set to channel 10
- Midi notes parameters : pad 1 = note 60 (C5), pad 2 = note 62 (D5) ...
- global midi channel = 10

The problem I get is that when the note C5 (60) is played on the channel 10 by the octatrack, the P3 plays all pads together at the same time !!!

Please, advise I'm getting crazy.

I think you need to set each channel to "off" to get them to use the global channel.

Somewhat related, Octatrack has been the most satisfying gear purchase since ND1.

Hi Samcarmila,
did you find a solution for your problem?
I would like to try a similar. setup with the OT and thr ND3p.
BTW, have you experience with slaving a Micro Modular with the OT?
thanks pit

Really, in what way? I'm looking for a drums machine/sampler etc for me so, could you elaborate a bit on this one?

Hi!

Ok, I hope this will help:

For drum patterns, use the Global channel, the default value for the global MIDI channel = 10 [GL.10]
On your sequencer program a pattern using the 6 note numbers that are set for each of the 6 channels (sounds or ‘pads’ if you like) on the 3P in the MIDI menu ( [n.60], etc). Unless you want to control sound parameters with CCs, it’s best to leave the individual MIDI channels off [Ch.OF].

The individual MIDI channels can be used to control sound parameters of the 6 channels of your 3P. And also allow you to play melodies, because MIDI notes that are sent to an individual MIDI channel will now control the pitch of the Tone section of the 3P.

Example of CC control: Let’s say you created a snare sound on channel2, and you have a beat programmed on your sequencer. And now you want to gradually change the noise filter settings of the snare during the song. On channel2 select individual MIDI channel 2, find the right CC for noise filter in the manual, then program your sequencer to send the CC to MIDI channel 2 for the filter sweep, while the drum pattern itself is sent to MIDI channel 10 (global channel)

Example of melodies: let’s say you created a xylophone sound on channel1, and selected individual MIDI channel 1 for that channel. If you now let your sequencer or keyboard send notes to MIDI channel 1 you will hear your xylophone sound playing the melody.. Remember: each of the 6 channels is monophonic, if you want to play chords on your synthetic xylophone, copy the same xylophone sound to the other channels, but use a different individual MIDI channel for each. Send the individual notes of the chord to these individual MIDI channels.

In conclusion, for drum patterns, it’s easiest to use the global MIDI channel + the note numbers as set in the MIDI menu. It’s best to keep the individual MIDI channels off, unless you want to control the parameters of the individual sounds, or play melodies. And if you use them, in most cases you want to make sure that the individual MIDI channels are different from each other, - but always make sure the individual MIDI channels are all different from the global MIDI channel!

Cheers,
Albert

I doubt our needs and wants are the same, but Octatrack, like ND1, are two pieces of gear that not only perform the functions I bought them for, but also provide many more possibilities than the initial need, and when combined make each other stronger.

OT can take one note from ND1 ( or anything for that matter ) and make any chord you wish. It will also allow sequencing and or looping of the ND1 via audio or MIDI. OT makes me think of getting ND2 or 3P for more realtime control. I added my voice to a "wish list" in this very forum shortly after getting ND1; I was pleased to see some of them implemented in the later versions.

Happy to ramble on further, is there anything you wanted to discuss PM me or we can start a new thread so others can join the conversation.
At this time, my idea of the perfect drum machine would be combining ND2 and Elektrons Analog Rhythm ii. Analog, Virtual Analog, a sequencer, trigger to midi convertor, effects, multiple outs, sampling and playback, and sound card capability.
I'm" making do" with ND1, OT, & ARmki. Completely badass setup, I'm spoiled.
