Piano 3 and the Electro 5 HP

Postby andyhof » 05 Dec 2017, 18:10

hey all, absolutely new to this forum and the world of Nord.

I've been a piano player since the beginning. I learned on a Baldwin Acrosonic apartment size uprighty type.
Then i bought a Fender Rhodes 73 Mark1 back in the day. Then up to a Yamaha Graded Hammer action digital piano for some live stuff. Then I discovered the Hammond Organ. Played live for many years playing blues on a B3 with Leslie 122.
Absolute dream. I dropped the piano for those years.. duh!
In 2003 I bought the Hammond XK-3 digital clonewheel organ. Hooked into my Leslie 145, absolute dream 2.
Still play this live. Then bought a newer Yamaha digital grand paino that weighs a ton.

Now i've been playing piano with an acoustic folk, blues 8 piece band. Mostly piano plus some fender rhodes electric piano. I dragged out the Yamaha digital piano...
I hate the piano sound live through two EV EXL112p speakers. It's not the speakers, its the digital piano. and it weighs 50lbs. I am not getting younger and do not want to drag that thing around anymore for mediocre piano sound.

So, ..............I think it is time to spend money and get something I will enjoy playing for years to come. I don't need organ... i have organ... but maybe 'some' organ could come in handy from time to time when i don't want to drag the XK3 and Leslie around.

The new keyboard must have AWESOME piano sound, decent keybed action, absolute lightweight/easy to transport.

So i've been looking at the Nord Piano and the Nord Electro.

The new Nord Piano 3 is only 88 keys and weighs 40lbs. So that's too heavy and too long (big).
The new Nord Electro 5d 73 with the waterfall keys. Don't like the action. Too lightweight/toy like.
The new Nord Electro 5 HP has the hammer portable action (will play today) and is lightweight.
The older Nord Piano 2 HP 73 has the hammer portable action and lightweight. (can't find one to play)

So can you guys/girls offer up suggestions? I want the piano sounds to be my main focus but don't want the weight. I want this to be truly portable as i go up in years. Should i consider the piano 2 HP 73? or will the memory size cause a problem? Would i be able to load lets say... 2 grands, 2 uprights, 2 rhodes, 2 wurlitzers into the limited memory space of a Nord Piano 2 HP 73? and maybe an organ or 2? and then a string or two to layer with? And what is your thoughts about looking at a Nord Electro 3 HP? Is that memory size too small?

Boy do i have questions...... I just wish they made a Piano 3 HP 73... that would seal the deal.

Thanks in advance
Andrew

I played the Electro 5 Hp73 today
The action is a bit spongy for my taste. And I will never use the synth section, I thought the organ was rather mediocre. Seems like a lot of money for things I will not use. I was unimpressed.

I think I need to sit down and play the piano 3. Seems like my instrument.

IMHO the new Nord Electro 5d 73 with the waterfall keys would be the best choice for you. It's not too lightweight/toy like (like you said). And you have the B3+Leslie included, so all in once. The best choice for live play.

Well, after playing the electro 5d 73, the electro 5 HP, and the Piano 3... i have decided that the Piano 3 is my instrument.

Thanks for all the suggestions and the private messages.

Of course the Piano 3 is your instrument, it is simply awesome!

The quality of the sounds, the broad dynamic range, the intimate connection that can be established with the keyboard...simply awesome.

Good choice
