Stage 3: enough hardware performance ?
Hi all there,
As I was planning to upgrade my Stage 2, I'm following all your posts regarding Stage 3.
Reading all about the actual performance issues and sw bugs I fear, the installed hardware like CPU or sound processors don't have the required performance.
Thus I should wait for a Stage 3 EX.
What do you think?
Helmut

That is truly impressive, if you read all of itst2ex wrote: ...I'm following all your posts regarding Stage 3.

I don't think the CPU or DSPs are "too weak"; the board seems to be quite powerful and can do a lot of stuff -- it's pretty much "state of the art" in my view.Reading all about the actual performance issues and sw bugs I fear, the installed hardware like CPU or sound processors don't have the required performance.

As to waiting for the NS 3EX, well if you don't need/want a new board now and is prepared to wait another 3 years or so, then wait for it... but if you do so only because you fear its underpowered, then I think you're reading too much into the present situation. Besides, there is a good chance that the CPU and DSPs could be the same in a possible NS3 EX.
So what to say... I bought the board now, because I needed/wanted it. I've never regretted buying it, and enjoy playing it just about every day.

Re: Stage 3: enough hardware performance ?
I think the big clue is in the fact they have to do a big conversion from NSMP2 to NSMP3. That indicates, at least to me, a big change in the sample/synth architecture that would seem unlikely to change in the next revision. The only possibly I can imagine is the NS3EX having more RAM for greater polyphony for the synth sections, as well as more flash storage for Pianos/Samples.

Re: Stage 3: enough hardware performance ?
I think that if there are unresolved issues that bother you about the NS3, you you should not buy it until they're resolved to your satisfaction. Whether that resolution comes with a software upgrade to the 3, or not until there's a new model, doesn't matter, does it?st2ex wrote:Reading all about the actual performance issues and sw bugs I fear, the installed hardware like CPU or sound processors don't have the required performance.

I mean, it would matter if the guy dropped $3K on a Kronos because he felt the NS3 didn't have its kinks ironed out and then two months later it did, so I can understand the anxiety.anotherscott wrote:I think that if there are unresolved issues that bother you about the NS3, you you should not buy it until they're resolved to your satisfaction. Re: Stage 3: enough hardware performance ?
Thanks for your feedback.
Well, "all" was a bit undue.......
There might be some indicators for limited hw ressources, such as polyphony or some midi problems, dual KB, and perhaps some others, they could be solved by a faster SW design.
Let's wait for the next updates. I expect Nord is working heavily to get performance improvements.
Regards, Helmut

Re: Stage 3: enough hardware performance ?
Yes, but if you need to buy something now, then you need to buy from what's available now. If you don't need it now, I'd say it's worth waiting at least a few months if you can to see if the major issues are addressed to your satisfaction. I suspect that the NS3 will do everything an NS3 is supposed to do before too long.Fallboard wrote:I mean, it would matter if the guy dropped $3K on a Kronos because he felt the NS3 didn't have its kinks ironed out and then two months later it did, so I can understand the anxiety.anotherscott wrote: I think that if there are unresolved issues that bother you about the NS3, you you should not buy it until they're resolved to your satisfaction.
