Stage 3: enough hardware performance ?

Post by st2ex »

Hi all there,
As I was planning to upgrade my Stage 2, I'm following all your posts regarding Stage 3.
Reading all about the actual performance issues and sw bugs I fear, the installed hardware like CPU or sound processors don't have the required performance.
Thus I should wait for a Stage 3 EX.

What do you think?

Helmut
Kind regards,
Helmut

That is truly impressive, if you read all of it :-)

I don't think the CPU or DSPs are "too weak"; the board seems to be quite powerful and can do a lot of stuff -- it's pretty much "state of the art" in my view.

As to waiting for the NS 3EX, well if you don't need/want a new board now and is prepared to wait another 3 years or so, then wait for it... but if you do so only because you fear its underpowered, then I think you're reading too much into the present situation. Besides, there is a good chance that the CPU and DSPs could be the same in a possible NS3 EX.

So what to say... I bought the board now, because I needed/wanted it. I've never regretted buying it, and enjoy playing it just about every day.

I think the big clue is in the fact they have to do a big conversion from NSMP2 to NSMP3. That indicates, at least to me, a big change in the sample/synth architecture that would seem unlikely to change in the next revision. The only possibly I can imagine is the NS3EX having more RAM for greater polyphony for the synth sections, as well as more flash storage for Pianos/Samples.

I think that if there are unresolved issues that bother you about the NS3, you you should not buy it until they're resolved to your satisfaction. Whether that resolution comes with a software upgrade to the 3, or not until there's a new model, doesn't matter, does it?

I mean, it would matter if the guy dropped $3K on a Kronos because he felt the NS3 didn't have its kinks ironed out and then two months later it did, so I can understand the anxiety.

Thanks for your feedback.
Well, "all" was a bit undue.......
There might be some indicators for limited hw ressources, such as polyphony or some midi problems, dual KB, and perhaps some others, they could be solved by a faster SW design.
Let's wait for the next updates. I expect Nord is working heavily to get performance improvements.
Regards, Helmut

Yes, but if you need to buy something now, then you need to buy from what's available now. If you don't need it now, I'd say it's worth waiting at least a few months if you can to see if the major issues are addressed to your satisfaction. I suspect that the NS3 will do everything an NS3 is supposed to do before too long.
