fixing a squeaky key
Hi guys,
I have a crunchy key (D2) on my NLA1's keybed. It's crunch is loud (and... annoying). The rest of keys are ok.
I don't want to send my A1 to Sweden only for that (and I need it to playing in a band), so I need your advice if I can fix it myself (I have a friend who is very good at repairing things)? Or it's possible to replace somehow my keybed with a semi-weighted model?
Thank you,
cristian

Re: fixing a crunchy key
Hej Cristian!
Well ... any "normal" electrical repair person should be able to clean the keybed of a NLA1.
There are probably several instructions with illustrations for other Nords on this forum.
Prepare, take your time, be very careful ... is it still under warranty?
(I have done several old Rolands myself.)
Replacing keybed? No, no ... you would even have to rewrite the software for other velocity curves etc ... so, forget that!
Does Fatar even have a 49 key SW keybed? If you must go SW, why not an external MIDI master kbd?

Re: fixing a crunchy key
If it's under warranty I would avoid opening it, you will void the warranty and any damage you might do will make things worse!
Do you need to send it back to sweden? Have you contacted your country distributor? Usually they handle service and repair too.

Re: fixing a crunchy key
I have no distributor in my country so I must send it to Germany. So, the dilemma seems to be to send it or not for "only" a crunchy key... I bought it new, from Thomann (last year) and it came with this little problem.

Re: fixing a crunchy key
I'm unclear on what "crunchy" means in this context. The keys are returned to idle position via springs. Perhaps the spring is making noise? This is usually referred to as "squeaky." "Crunchy" moves my brain in a different direction...perhaps there's something inside there which doesn't belong there?
Curious to know what country you are in...?
bless, pablo
ps -- all good advice above, btw

Re: fixing a crunchy key
Thank you, Pablo, I edited the caption - I'm sure the spring is making that noise, so I have a "squeaky key". It makes noise both when I press the key and when the key comes back to idle position. The biggest squeak appears when the key is pressed almost down. I live in Romania. I would not send it in another country only for that, even if it's a little annoying (because A1 is faraway my preferred synth from my collection - I just LOVE it!).
My concern is to not have a broken key in time, if the spring is squeaky the key will remain functional as my other keys in time?

Re: fixing a squeaky key
Nothing is going to break there. Ever. The plastic is rubbing against the spring and causing a little noise. It can be possible that removing and then reseating the spring will eliminate this. A conservative amount of non-conductive lube would be the next step if that did not produce favorable result. I believe that if you search "squeak" or "squeaky" in this forum you will find post(s) from members who have been through this.
Technically, yes it is true that there may be warranty void concerns if you open the instrument. Some folks will do it anyway and others not. I guess it depends on how much it annoys you...

Re: fixing a squeaky key
Strange, I have the exact same problem with my NL A1, the D2 key is squeky. Pretty annoying, but I almost forgot about it as I bought a pair of new closed headphones.
I´ve got instructions from Clavia how to open it to take a look or to send it to my shop, but I have done neither. I don´t like sending things and I don´t like opening things (unless it is a box with a synth in it).
