Nord Stand for Stage 2 SW73

This is the right place if your topic concerns different Nord Keyboards, you are not sure which one is the right one for you, etc.

Nord Stand for Stage 2 SW73

Post by Johnny Sunshine »

Hi, I'm looking to buy a Stage 2 SW73 purely due to portability.

I've got a few gigs lined up in the centre of London where if I can get to by train, great! So, the least amount of gear I can carry the better.

As said, I can't seem to find out as to whether the Nord Stand Ex fits the Stage 2 SW73. Does anybody know? I like the idea of unscrewing the legs from the SW73 and popping them in the Nord bag.

Anyone?

If not, why isn't there such a thing available for the sw73 as its all about the portability side of things isn't it?

Hi Johnny & welcome to the forum!

The SW73 versions indeed is kind of portable, at least for a >61keys board with decent keybed. (The Roland VR09 is even more portable though)

However, the Stand EX is NOT compatible with the SW73 version (There seem to be a possible DIY job possible, see here: http://www.norduserforum.com/nord-elect ... html#p6122 but you have to use some rivets etc. so it's not straightforward.

Plus, the stand does NOT fit into the Nord Softbag for the SW73, so you would have to carry it apart anyhow.

If you aim for portability, a simple X-Stand is still the lightest and most practical solution IMHO (though not the best solution function-wise).
That being said, I am quite happy with my SW73 in terms of portability.

Cheers, Johannes

Many thanks for the informative and quick response.

I've also had a reply from the Nord Technical Team who said that it's not possible due to the SW73 not having a suitable chassis to mount the stand frame onto. Hence why the SW73 is so light.

How difficult is it to take the casing apart so that the stand mount could be riveted into position?

More important is whether the chassis is strong enough. Maybe it is too thin, or the material distorts easily? There might be a reason why the did it that way.

I think I've got it, well hopefully....

What about a thin but rigid metal plate that is the same size as the bottom of the Compact. Attach the two end plates of the stand EX at either end of the metal plate. Screw the legs in and place the Compact on the top. It shouldn't really move about provided you cut out circular holes to match the rubber feet from the Compact.

The whole system wouldn't be overly thick so should all fit in the gig bag and there's no drilling or attaching the plate to the under chassis of the Compact required...

What do you reckon. Would it work or am I missing something obvious???

Hi Johnny,

For several reasons you are best advised to give up that idea and move along to some other (borrowing a barstool or two?)

The Stand EX plates are rather beefy, and rightfully so, made to accommodate not only a 41lb instrument, but the additional possibility of some rockabilly guy doing a Jerry Lee Lewis thing on it. ;-) Though the legs are rather lightweight, the metal plates are not. I don't have specs handy at the moment (if I have these at all), but the plates and legs together will add considerable weight to your overall kit.

The Nord 73-note gig bag fits the compact Stage models like a glove. Not just any ordinary glove, but one of those stretchy surgical gloves. You practically need a shoehorn to get the instrument into the gig bag. It is very snug. Very. I highly doubt there's any way to get those plates into the bag along with the instrument at the same time, and then you still have four legs and two diagonal support struts to consider...

What is this thin but rigid metal plate? If it's thin, it won't be very rigid. Aluminum would need to be fairly thick, but would be light in weight. Steel would be crazy heavy by the time you got to a useful thickness.

These things are not obvious to you because you've not held a Stand EX in your hands, or tried putting a Stage Compact into the Nord gig bag, but you would surely give up that idea once you've had that experience. That would not make for a tube-friendly rig.

Back to the drawing board, I'm afraid...

Bless,

Pablo

Why not get a handy man to build you a custom made stand? I built this 3 section (flat pack) replica Hammond M102 for my Electro 5d 61. The top and back sections are hinged and fold flat. The 2 end sections are identical in size to the M102, however, I wanted to keep the footprint as small as possible, so it's 3" shorter than the original. It's made from 2 B&Q flat panel hollow doors (£24.00. each). I inserted lengths of cls around the edges to give it strength. A few coats of lacquer and Bobs yer Uncle. Its as light as a feather, very strurdy, lays flat in the back of a VW Polo and bolts together in less than 3 minutes. I can hide all my cables inside so it looks presentable to the audience. I might put a wee sign on the back "Nord-Inside"!

If you would like more details let me know.

While the stand above certainly looks lovely, i doubt it will suit the OP's requirements to carry it around to various London gigs on the tube ;)

Hi Kirsty, yes, your right enough, I never read the bit about carrying it on the Tube.

Thanks for your compliments on the stand.
