Not helplful directly to your request but, here's some history of how it was done on the original recording.

(I have recreated a reasonable facsimile in the past using an organ going into the LFO on a Korg MS20 controlling the filter with a square wave.)

"Townshend is playing block chords spread between the two keyboards of the 1968 Lowrey Berkshire Deluxe TBO-1 organ. The output of the organ is fed into the audio input of the EMS VCS 3 mk1 synth. The first bit of processing to be applied to the organ sound is a low-frequency oscillator (LFO) controlling the frequency of a voltage-controlled filter (VCF), using a sine or triangle wave shape. In other words, the synth is turning the tone of the organ from mellow to bright, up and down automatically. There are pictures of Townshend playing this instrument, as well as a video of Pete Townshend demonstrating how the sound was produced."

It is one of the coolest keyboard parts in rock history IMO - always loved it.

Don't know if any of the Nords have external signal inputs that you can process? You might be able to find a cheap guitar pedal that does that kind of LFO filtering.

Baba O' Riley is another one that is tricky to nail the feel on - it's so out of time on the original recording - old school :-)

Unfortunately the E5 isn't equipped with the right stuff to really get a close approximation. One thing you could try is to use the Wah effect on the Hammond and sweep it, either with a footpedal or maybe the front panel knob. It won't sound very close, but it might just work for you at a pinch.

I would also add a fairly generous amount of reverb to the Hammond sound.

Or try the flange/phaser? Probably not spot on either, though.

If you have an iPad + interface like the iConnectAudio, you could route your 5D through Moog Filtatron (a $7 iPad app with nice LFO filter) and back out...

Nord Modulars G1 and G2 have external signal inputs for such things. Thanks for the tip on MS20...I have an MS10 which might get close.

Bless,

Pablo

It's not the origin Who-sound, but maybe it will help you to find it out:
B3 full, no perc. no Leslie
Tremolo 1+2 ( eleven o'clock)
a little bit of Flang
a lttle bit of Rotary

I had my Korg CX3 organ going into the the MS20 external input, using a square or triangle wave to drive the LFO on the filter to get the repeating part. I may have run the whole thing through an MXR phaser pedal too. The drummer had it in his headphones to follow (just like Keith Moon)

Sounded half decent - of course this was back in the early 80's so not sure of all the details now. :-)

Let me know if you get close Pablo, maybe post the results for us to hear. The MS10 has the same external input function.

The most fun part about that MS20 (I had two actually) was getting patches set up in between songs - always a mad scramble. I had 6 or 7 keyboards then, no midi and no memories, all sounds from scratch on the fly. What fun!
