Sound only coming from one speaker (NL2X)

Post by NordSouth »

Hi there. Just got my NL2X. Im experiencing a bit of a problem. I only get sound coming from one of the monitors using A/B outputs. The only time I can hear the sound coming from the second monitor is when I run the synth through my eventide harmonizer, though even then it sounds more like an echo rather than the full spectrum of frequencies I get from the first speaker. Any idea what could be casing it? I know the monitors are working fine, cuz I use them for all of my gear without any issues. Thanks, guys.

From the Lead 3 manual, p. 125. (Referring to the MENU section in the Nord display)

Here you set the Audio Routing for SLOT A-D, i.e. how the four Slots should route the audio to the physical outputs of Nord Lead 3 (see “Connections” on page 10). Select Slot with the RIGHT/LEFT NAVIGATOR button or by pressing the corresponding SLOT button. Change Audio Routing with the ROTARY DIAL.
Modes:
M1-M4: The Slot routes the audio in Mono to one of the outputs OUT A-D
S1: The Slot routes the audio in Stereo (if selected in the Program) to OUT A (left) and OUT B (right) S2: The Slot routes the audio in Stereo (if selected in the Program) to OUT C (left) and OUT D (right) Note: Don’t forget to use the ‘store System Settings’ function described on page 128 before powering off Nord Lead 3. Otherwise the changes you have made won’t be recalled the next time you power up.

Hi NordSouth,

I'm not sure why nsureit is talking about the NL3 manual, since you have an NL2X, but you should have a look at the NL2X manual. There are audio routing schemes which are "non-traditional." Make sure that you have those things set appropriately.

Hi, I didi look in the manual. It says that you should always use outputs A and B when connecting the synth to a mixer, audio interface, etc. I tried running them directly to my monitors, which doesnt seem to be working (haven't tried connecting them to my audio interface yet). Could it be a faulty output?

It may be that an early page in the manual describes general audio connections, but if you look more deeply further back in the manual you will see that it is possible to create different audio routing schemes. Assuming that you purchased your instrument used from a private party, it is possible that the prior owner has indulged in some custom programming there. You will want to go through those settings and confirm that they are set appropriately. If they are, then it would appear that perhaps there is a faulty output, but you don't want to rush your instrument to a repair shop before making sure that the software settings are correct.

Sorry about that. I could not find the NL2X manual online, so I thought the NL3 might apply. I was trying to suggest a routing issue. My bad.

nsureit,

you were right on target with suggesting routing issue, so no apologies needed. ALL Nord manuals are available for free download from Nord website.

Hey guys. I figured it out. Apparently routing it straight to the monitors will output a mono signal only, at least in my case it does. I connected the NL2x to my audio interface and all is well again :). Thanks for being so helpful, ya'll.

All's well that ends well, but...sounds like perhaps it was a cabling issue. The Nord has no way of knowing whether you have connected it to monitors or audio interface and will not somehow "output a mono signal only" in one case and not the other.
