Home-made half-moon switch for Electro!

Post by simonbeck »

I built one of these the other day. OK, it isn't particularly elegant (or half-moon-shaped!) but it cost me less than £15, took about an hour and a half to make, and it works with an Electro 3. As you probably know, the Electro has a rotor pedal input which uses a TS plug to switch between either slow OR stop and fast. My switch uses this input, and is designed to be attached to the front rail with Velcro, where it can be easily operated by the left hand while playing. I used a jack socket in the bottom of the case to save space and to allow the cable to be easily changed.

Components:
A Telecaster-style 3-way pickup selector switch
A barrel-style switch knob
A panel-mount mono 6.35mm (1/4") jack socket
A small ABS project box large enough to accommodate the switch and the socket. Make sure there are no internal posts or lugs!
Insulated wire
Self-adhesive Velcro tape

Tools:
Solder
Soldering iron
Small screwdrivers
Hacksaw
Hand drill and bits

The switch is configured so that the left and centre positions correspond to slow (open), and the right position corresponds to fast (closed). You may need to change the Rotor Pedal setting to Latching and possibly also the polarity.

I will try to take some photos.

Great idea using the telecaster pickup selector - that was the piece I couldn't figure out how to make easily. I feel a project coming on...

Looking forward to your pics.

This is really nice solution! Thanks for posting
I am certainly going to give it a go - i've been using a footswitch but i'm interested in trying this.

All the components apart from the switch and the barrel knob are available from any branch of Maplin (for those of us in the UK). There are plenty of Telecaster switches with and without knobs on Ebay, or you could try a local guitar shop. If you really don't want to stick Velcro onto your beautiful Swedish keyboard, I can't think of anything else that will work (I tried a magnet but it seems that the Electro's chassis is aluminium rather than the steel used for the top of the case)

Does the 4D use a latching switch, not a momentary?

Answered my own question by reading the manual, you can set it to use either. Which rocks, I have a Leslie 1/2 moon i rewired to use with my Vent.

Thanks for the thread, it never crossed my mind that I could do this.

I found that the NS2 has only a 2 position switch for the leslie - Slow/Stop and Fast. It uses a TS jack socket - a 3 position switch would need TRS... AFAIK the C2D has a 3 position switch: Slow - Stop - Fast. Not sure about the electro?
Anyway, this may determine which kind of switch you use :-)
Surprised to discover the NS2 chassis was aluminium rather than steel sheet! I was thinking about using some powerful Neodymium magnets to attach the box in a non-destructive way. I guess this still might be possible if you were prepared to open the case and stick a small piece of steel plate (or magnets) on the inside, where you would want to apply the magnets. I'm not keen to try that.

Incidentally, I found some very old threadson here which may be of related interest -

I found a 3 position switch with the right sort of knob but will use a TS jack with it. I plan to just wire it (for the NS2) so that centre and left are slow, and right is fast - same as OP. I haven't found the right size box yet, it needs to be just big enough. Switch is here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/271560749985 - from china! I plan to make one for me, and two for buddies with Electro.

I just bought one of these aluminium boxes for my 'summing mixer' project (thanks Ricard!)
They come in various sizes (the 'A' size might be perfect?) - and colours - including Red ;-)

May be a more durable option than a plastic project box
