NLA1 patch; Everything In Its Right Place

Post by Marlowes »

Hej!

Anyone in the audience who remember Radiohead, their "Kid A" album
(yes, it was called an album back in those days)
back in the obscure year 2000 ... raise your hand if you do ... no? :wtf:
But Pablo and Ricard, how about you? :?

Anyhow, just listened to the best track of that album;
"Everything In Its Right Place",
and got inspired to find out how to make dreamy Radiohead pianos!
(Some ambient noise added too ...)

Recipe
Osc: 4 = squ, osc config = shp, mod env amt = 5.0, osc ctrl = 0 (makes a narrow square)
Filter: LP24, kb track 1, freq = 1.5 morph -> 4.0, res = 0, mod env amt = 2.5 (the mod env will open the filter)
Mod env: A-D-R = 1.0-4.0-3.0 (slow & dreamy)
Amp env: A-D-R = 2.0-sus-4.7 (more of the same)
Unison = 3 (you want it phat!)
Chorus = 1.0 (more phat)
Reverb: room, 3.0
Velocity: output 5.0 -> 10.0 (adds dynamics)
Oct shift: -1 (you want a dull dramatic sound)
Delay: wet/dry = 2.5, feedback = 1, ping pong = on, mst clk = on (I was running the Arturia Spark at 100 bpm as master for the demo)

The final mixing of the album was done here:

Salut, les copains!

And "things you didn't think you needed to know";
In 1928 the French version of Dr Moog invented the "ondes Martenot". The EU is always way ahead, you know! 8-)
What about that, then? Well this "early Moog" was played on the "Kid A" album by the Radio band member Jonny.

Cool, huh? :ugeek:

By the way, "Kid A", is considered by many magazines and polls to be one of the 100 best albums ever! :D

The cool thing about the Ondes Martenot is the way it is a complete instrument, where the loudspeaker (or 'diffuseur'; the most common options of which can be seen in the picture above) is also considered part of the instrument. There are a number of specified playing techniques (for instance 'au ruban' using the pitch ring), and it has gained acceptance in classical music as an instrument in its own right.

Some say the USA (Thaddeus Cahill) made the first electric synthesiser in 1897: the Telharmonium (pictured below)

But if you take a look here - you could argue it was the Czechs in 1748 who take the prize for first electrical instrument...

So ultimately, Michael is right - the EU is way ahead! :lol:
And now for something completely different...

On the other hand, the Telharmonium was actually not electronic, but electric, i.e. it did not make use of vacuum tubes, transistors or any other amplifying component. It used large rotary generators to generate the sine waves which were then mixed to produce the tones. Impressive as it was (all in all it took several railway cars to transport), it can still not be considered electronic, and neither can the alleged Czech effort in 1748.

The Ondes is an electronic instrument however, and moreover it was also not just a one-off instrument but actually produced in several hundred copies, making it a definite predecessor of the modern synthesizer both when it comes to sound generation and its aim at some some sort of a market. The French really did get it right with that one.

I was careful not to use the word 'electronic' ;-)
