Using modern Nords as a master keyboard?

Postby Puzzlefactory » 10 Mar 2015, 11:49

I'm thinking of selling my old Nord lead 2 and maybe getting a Nord Lead 4 (or possibly an access virus keyboard). I was wondering if the newer Nord keyboards behave differently when used as a controller keyboard with a daw?

For instance, it would be nice if the "keyboard octave" (to change the range of notes the keyboard plays) buttons also worked when playing soft synths using the keyboard.

I have limited space so am looking for a synth that could also act as a master keyboard for my studio.

Hej Puzzlefactory!

Yes, the NLA1 can do the octave change for external units.
"MIDI Note messages at the MIDI output will be transposed."

Probably the NL4 can too ... just check the manuals!

something to consider: neither the Lead 4 or NLA1 have aftertouch

may or not matter to you.

deal breaker for me.

I'd completely overlooked that! Tbh I was consisering a rack (A1R) myself - I'd assumed it responds to midi aftertouch messages? I'm going off to check the specs now...
Edit: Can't find the answer, so I'll wait for Michael to make his way back to this thread :-)

The A1R will respond to midi cc's. Aftertouch is not a cc though -- it has it's own status bytes. If you're intending to use a rack unit with an external controller, the question will be can the controller map AT to a CC? Or for studio situation you could run the controller's midi through midi-ox and map AT to the CC(s) of your choosing.

Just checked out the manual and it looks like the NL4 can transpose at the midi output when using "global octave shift". Which is nice. :)

Ah, of course! :  Thanks Pablo, I hadn't thought it through really - I blame the wine!
