Help with MIDI with new update

Post by lecroc »

Hi

I use a NS2 as my main deck and have the NL4 up top. I control the programme selection from Setlist Maker on an iPad and the Extern section for each programme to select a performance on the Lead. Under the previous software version all was well: a touch of the iPad and both decks went to the correct settings.

However, under I.40 things have gone really weird. The Lead keeps jumping to A.1, and I have to select a programme either side on the NS2 then go back to the required programme for the Lead to select the right programme. Sometimes I have to do this multiple times. Sometimes there is the utterly bizarre situation whereby I can select the next programme on the NS2, go back to the one I want and the Lead selects A.1, rock away and back and it selects the correct programme. Repeat ad infinitum. And when I am in the Extern menu section I can't select any even programmes: every odd one is fine but if I try to select an even programme it defaults back to A.1. It's driving me faintly bonkers so any pointers would be gratefully received.

I'm using global channel 2 on both machines. Mode is Global, Extern Midi channels A/B on 2, Prog change as required, the bank selectors off, likewise the cc number, and send on load on (think that's all the relevant settings).

I stress that everything worked just fine under the previous OS. All my problems started after the upgrade. I must be missing something really obvious with this upgrade...

Many thanks

Dave

Is there a possibility that you have competing program change messages on two slots at once? I use a similar rig, with external sections on the NS2 running to a Micro Modular and a G2E, but use channels 6/7 for the G2E and channel 9 for the Micro Mod (with Mode set to Program). Try changing either slot ext channel to something else and see if this continues. If Ext A has a program change message for 37 and Ext B has a program change for 1 (or 0 really), then the second extraneous pgm chg message will always take you away from your intended target. The leap to the newer OS has not made any differences to my operation and I use External on almost every single program.

Bless,

Pablo

Thanks Pablo. The thought had crossed my mind as if I look carefully the Nl4 does 'flick' to A.1 from something else, so that might be a useful avenue to explore.

If I do have a different Ext slot channel selected then the programme change doesn't work when I'm fiddling in the Extern menu. However, I'm wondering if there is a conflict with the Ext slots prog change and the send on load bank change, given that I've got the cc32 LSB set at OFF. That would default to A.1, right? I seem to recall a post a while ago saying that under the old OS there was a bug which meant that the banks couldn't be selected properly (0-3 for the programme banks, 4 & 5 for the performance banks). Could it be that this is now fixed but the setup which worked for me previously is now causing conflicts?

I'm away from my babies this weekend so can't try stuff out, unfortunately. I'll get back next week so will try again ASAP, since we have a gig next Friday and I need quick & reliable programme changes otherwise I'm screwed. Will report further, though I may need you to detail exactly the setup you have in terms of what is set to what channels and what you have on the Extern menus if I can't figure it out.

MIDI eh? Don'tcha just love it. An extremely hard subject a) to understand in the first place, and b) to explain even when you do understand it....

Many thanks again. This could be a useful thread because I can't believe I'm the only one who is new to MIDI and is struggling

What I would do is first get a MIDI monitor program running to see what messages your setup generates.
Without that is nearly impossible to know what extraneous messages are being sent out.
