Question re turning off resonance on Stage EX and Stage 2

Post by michael_C1 »

I'm experiencing some confusion about what exactly is turned off on the Nord Stage EX and Stage 2 when the Piano 'Res' button is not engaged.

Does the generation one type of sustain resonance get turned off also, or only the gen 2 type of resonance between individual notes regardless of sustain?

Sympathetic (string) resonance gets turned off, pedal down resonance probably not as that effect is based on the samples.

Thanks for the reply maxpiano. It may be a reasonable assumption that pedal down resonance would remain if the resonance button were switched off, but it's one of those things that I'd prefer knowing for sure. If someone with a Stage 2 or EX has time to check it out there would be a definite answer, and I'd appreciate it.

I had a Stage EX for a while, and at times the string resonance between notes seemed a bit much. Unfortunately I didn't read the whole manual :) so I didn't try turning it off. Now I've got a Stage Classic and it's not an issue, but I'm thinking of upgrading. I would really be unhappy if I went for a Stage 2, or even another EX, and ALL resonance got turn off by that switch.

I understand, on the other hand I don't see what type of test may be done to check, probably only a direct comparison between a classic and a 2: if you have any other idea I can try it on my NS2.

My assumption is based on the fact that the manual (and the button) specifically indicate "String" resonance, but I may be wrong as looking back to the Nord keyboards page http://www.nordkeyboards.com/sound-libr ... nformation they call String resonance the pedal down... :?

Thanks once again. I could be wrong, but I thought a basic test might be to just listen to the sound of several sustained block chords with pedal down, both with the resonance feature engaged and again with it off. If the chords sound the same, then the on/off resonance switch isn't affecting pedal down resonance.

Arpeggios might not work as well because the 'between the notes' resonance might be engaged with the resonance switch on.

If I could find a Stage 2 or Electro 4 HP locally, I'd try this myself. But strangely, here on Long Island, NY i don't find many Nords in the stores.
