Pedal Solutions?

Post by NightSkyStudio »

I'm tired of securing my pedals (sustain, swell, volume, rotor) to the floor with gaffer or duct tape. What do you do to make sure your pedals don't move on you during a performance? I can imagine a system where they're velcroed to a thin board and that's somehow secured to the floor and then it fits nicely into some case for transportation. I've looked around and can't find anything that fits this need. Surely I'm not the only keyboardist who's experienced this problem. Would love to see your solutions!
Thanks,
Tom

A piece of textured rubber mat worked OK, but it was something else to carry around.
For sustain and rotor pedals I joined 2 Yamaha FC5 on a sheet of metal which is longer than the pedals themselves, so the foot rests on it too and that reduces slipping a lot. Then I glued a piece of textured rubber on the bottom of the metal sheet.
I use a Roland EV5 which when positioned touching the leg of the the X stand it does not move.

Pedal Train make great lightweight pedal boards that come with their own cases and Velcro. I use them for my guitar pedals. They last forever. £40 upwards, depending on the size, and whether you want a flight case or a soft case. The big one is well over £250 if you want it with a flight case, but you can fit at least a dozen guitar pedals on that, so something smaller would probably suit you.

Unless of course, you have multiple expression pedals, dampers, a leslie switch, a Ventilator, a wah pedal..............!

I myself have the same problem and it can be a nightmare at gigs.

Looking forward to see if there are any decent solutions which are posted up...

Thanks for the ideas so far.

I found a drum mat from On Stage and was wondering if anyone has tried it for keyboards. Comes in 4x4 and 6x4 sizes, is lightweight, and is supposed to be very non-skid. It's also fairly inexpensive at $30 and $35 respectively.

Velcro and an 99p doormat works well for me, not very R&R but relatively effective. The mat also fits in the Stage 2 bag, so doesn't need to be rolled up.

I just use a piece of plywood with a $2.95 rubberized door mat from home depot secured underneath. Drilled holes through the ply in the places that I needed to run long zip ties around the pedals. I have 2 yamaha fc5's for volume and control, two sustain pedals, a boss fs-5u a 6 spot power strip and a jdi duplex di box all secured to the board. It works nice for me. I have an old gig bag that it fits in. I just bundled all of my pedal cables at the board and have them set to the length they need to be to get to tier 1 and 2 of my rig.

Supplies
zip ties (12" or longer)
2' x 1.5' ply wood 3 or 5 ply
rubber door mat

Tools
Drill
Scissors

+1 for rubber door mat (i was planning to use velcro as well, but it wasn't necessary)

I guess the only reason why I liked securing them down was so that each show, they are in the same place, no unloading pedals and putting them in their place on the mat... that way all of the cables can be bundled into a "snake" with zip ties (get the ones that have the tabs so they can release) and it looks much nicer on stage without (in my case) 12 cords running from the ground to tier 1 and 2

Just a thought...
