Nord Drum 2 program change and bank select

Post by bumathan »

Hi,
I'm a little bit struggling , programming Logic Pro X to send program changes to the Nord Drum 2/
The manual says " Transmit the LSB value first, then the MSB value."

Here is my custom bank selection written in Logic environment. I can change the programs but not the banks.

Control 10 32 2
Control 10 0 0
Program 10 23

Thank you.

The correct way to enter bank change in the ND2 is as following:

Controller change 0, value 0
Controller change 32, value 0-7 (this is essentially bank number 1-8)
then program change which triggers the program change

Hi,
Thank you for your answer Kroffe.
Unfortunately, even with this configuration ( CC0, then CC32), only the program change is received by the ND2. Not the bank changes.
(By the way, the manual is not really clear about that on page 31...)

I've tried many configurations without any luck. Could it be a midi connection issue ?
Here's the connection I use:

ND2 MIDI OUT -> NS2 MIDI IN ( EXT ) usb -> Sequencer (Logic) -> usb NL4 MIDI IN (Thru ch10) -> ND2 MIDI IN

It works fine for sending and receiving notes from sequencers but maybe CC 32 get stucked in the NL4, I don't know :)

Thanks for your help,

Hi!
Did you try connecting the ND2 directly to your computer, without NS2/NL4 in between?
if it then works correctly, build up your network step by step to see which component or cable causes the problem

Hi Wartaler,
At the moment, I don't have any midi to USB adapter and my soundcard doesn't have midi ports. That's why I've used this "Nord" route specified in the previous post :-)
But, you are right, this would be the best way to "debug" this issue. My old RME Fireface has midi ports. I'm gonna plug it to a computer with FW, test and post the results...
Thanks !

Well,
After a short test, it works fine using a direct connection... Program and bank changes without any problem.
Too bad I can't use my "old school" midi network, I'll purchase a midi to usb adapter :-)
Thank you for your answers !

Make sure the ND2 has CC on SR (send and receive) in MIDI menu.
And send Bank MSB (most significant byte) CC#00 first, then Bank LSB (least significant byte) CC#32 second.
Also, try to connect logic directly to ND2 to opt out all other potential fail sources.

edit: OK, apparently you found the problem.

Yes Kroffe,
For some reason, the NL4 transmits everything but the bank select CC to the ND2...
Thank you

I see, .. I didn't read your post carefully enough, so it's via USB-MIDI of your NS2 and NL4, clever solution!
It's indeed strange that some messages get filtered out before they reach the ND2...
I'm not an expert on those boards, or USB-MIDI, (or MIDI), so..no idea I'm afraid

-why don't you use your old RME Fireface then? ;)
Anyway, if you're going to buy a MIDI interface, try finding one that uses Core-MIDI (requires no drivers), perhaps keep away from the very cheapest, but small ESI, or E-MU USB interfaces work fine

Cheers,
Have a nice weekend!

Yes, using the "Midi Thru" capabilities of my other Nord devices with two simple midi cables was the "easiest" and fastest solution. I did not want to buy an other midi interface just to plug the ND2, since every other synth I have use USB.

Ah ah... That's true. I can't connect it to my Mac anymore, since Apple has decided to remove the firewire from their latests iMac but hopefully, with a Firewire to Thunderbolt adapter, all my problems will be solved. :)
All things would have been simpler with a USB port on the ND2 or with a midi input an the UAD Apollo...

Regarding the NL4 filtering CC commands and not sending to the ND2, maybe I should report this to Clavia; the firmware of the NL4 is still recent... I don't know.

Anyway, thank you for your tips & have a nice week-end too !
Cheers,
