Nord C1 Leslie hookup questions

Postby michael_C1 » 09 Jun 2011, 00:12

Hi,
I've got a Leslie 145 that I want to hook up to my Nord C1. Although I've got a Leslie Combo Preamp available, it would be better if Leslie speeds could be controlled from the organ itself. There is a Leslie kit #1147 which works for some of the Hammond-Suzuki models, like XK3 and XK3c, and allows hookup of their 11-pin connector via this box to a 6-pin Leslie 145 or 147.

Does anyone have any knowledge of whether or not this adapter would work with the Nord C1? Thanks.

Michael

I haven't seen the C1, but as far as I'm aware the 11 pin Leslie connector has been standard ever since solid state Leslies appear in the 1970s. However, I'd be surprised if the connector on a Nord would be able to supply power to the Leslie as connectors traditionally do - or is that something the combo amp can deal with?

Thanks for the reply, Ritchie. The Leslie #1147 kit itself supplies AC power to the Leslie. I'm just interested in whether or not it can be used with the Nord C1, since the connector kit is made for Hammond-Suzuki products.

Nord C1 Leslie hookup questions

I haven't tried the C1 with my 11-pin leslie yet but I can't imagine it not working if you're using that kit. As mentioned previously I don't think the 11-pin cables carry power but aside from that they should be standard.

I'm using my C1 with a 11-pin leslie cable to a Leslie 322 and everything seems to be standard and working.

I can use the on/off/stop buttons on the C1 to control the Leslie. The Leslie even goes to a stand-by modus when powering off the C1.
I don't think you would experience any trouble in using the connector kit with the C1.

I've made this connection with the same type of adapter. It can be done. I had a Leslie 760 ( 9 pin) and connected it to my XK3c. When that was stolen, I bought a C2. It connected fine, however I now use my Leslie 860 as It's a 11 pin and connects directly. On board controls work perfectly. It's nice to plug the mono line out into a guitar amp as well and blend the two tones...

Are there any options that are cheaper for connecting a vintage leslie to a 11pin clonewheel? $385USD is a bit steep for something like this.

I have a nord c2 and a hammond c3 that I have been running through my vintage 50's leslie for a few years now. Incredible sound but I want to be able to connect directly from the organ to the leslie. Are there any options other than this 1147 connector? DIY? I could probably hack something but don't want to drop that much as I have a trek preamp that works just fine but is a bit bulky.

Thoughts?

I made up an adapter lead from my C2D to a Leslie clone (Sonorous 602, as it happens). In this case, It's got a female 9-pin connector at the speaker end (we're talking Leslie 760 pin-outs) and at the other end a row of sockets - one to take the high-level output from the Nord, one to take the jack of the Nord Half-moon switch, and one to take the mains power into the Leslie (or Sonorous, in this case).

All the wiring diagrams are online - Uncle Harvey's guide to Leslie pinouts - so it should be OK (if you get the right 11-pin configuration!). The high-level output on the Nord is designed to drive the Leslie amp directly.

You should be able to buy an 11-pin cable fairly cheaply as it's a current bit of gear. I just cannibalised the 9-pin lead I got with the speaker, as it's fairly unlikely I'll ever have an organ with a 9-pin socket on it. I kept the connector for that end, anyway.

That's awesome! So you just soldered connections onto the right pins inside the 11 pin end at the organ and made female inputs for power, speed, and mono input?? Can you pm me some pictures? ? I don't want to drop that much on a connector box...
