Connect external Keyboard to USB of Electro 6D

Post by Dingsdada »

i want to buy a Casio PX-S3100 and use it to play internal sounds but also control the Electro 6D.
The casio does not have Midi out, but "USB to Host" and "USB to Device".
It is possible to connect directly via USB Cable or do i have to buy a USB Midi Host interface?

No and this is valid in general: you cannot connect 2 USB devices (USB Type B connector, like those 2 keyboards are) to each other without a USB Host = computer/tablet/other (USB Type A connector and host functions) in the middle

In case you have a keyboard like the Casio PX-S3100 that has only USB MIDI, but the other has MIDI DIN (like NE6), you have an alternative which is to add a "USB MIDI Host" (search this exact words on the web and you will find some) box, to convert the PX USB MIDI to DIN.

the Casio has both types. Type A is intended for a Midi-module.
I don't know if there are any standards for Midi over USB...

That Audio+MIDI BT adapter is specific, if Casio Manual does not specify the possibility to connect anything else than that + USB Flash memories to its port A, then you have your answer (unfortunately); some other keyboards allow their USB Type A to host a USB MIDI connection (like Yamaha MoDX or Korg Kronos, for example), but when it happens it is stated explicitly in manuals and/or release notes.

Problem is that we don't know if the USB-A port on the Casio has full host functionality. Probably not. If it had, two things could be possible: connect it to the USB-B port of the Nord; connect it to the Nord's MIDI ports via an ESI MidiMate ex.

You can connect a BT dongle (Casio WU10) and another BT dongle on the Nord's DIN MIDI ports (Yamaha MD-BT01) - but you don't know if they would be able to pair.

So best way may be a USB MIDI host.

Hi Dingsdada,

I have a Casio CT-S1 which has the same MIDI outputs as yours. So I thought there might be hope and tried it. Unfortunately no success. The reason for writing nonetheless is that I fear that the output „DEVICE“ does not even send normal MIDI signals but seems to be usable only with the accessory Bluetooth tool.

I tested USB A at Casio side to USB B at nord side, no signal coming. I also tested USB A at Casio side to MIDI 5-pin at nord side, no signal. This latter result makes me think that the Casio isn‘t sending normal MIDI at all there.

A pity, because after I‘ve read your question I felt this could be nice for me too.

Cheers from the rainy middle of Germany

You can connect it to your Electro with this:

https://kentonuk.com/product/midi-usb-host-mk3/

You can also do it with a Raspberry Pi and a fewlines of code. It can connect both keyboards via USB.

This is a great solution if you have a Pi! Check out this post that explains how it works:
