New Rusty Mike Music

Post by Rusty Mike »

Hello all,

I've dropped my latest recording on my Soundcloud Page. It's a cover of Tad Dameron's jazz standard "On A Misty Night". My friend Brian is covering soprano and tenor sax parts.

The purpose of this exercise was to work more with Steinberg's Groove Agent tool, as well as Native Instruments' Strummed Acoustic 2 virtual instruments. I also wanted to get more time with The Famous E Electric Piano VST in Kontakt. Sorry friends, but there are no Nords in this particular recording.

Here's the link. Please enjoy and share feedback if you like. Thanks for listening.

Are those wind instruments played by actual wind instruments or have some aliens decided to provide you with some brand new VSTs? Holy crap this recording sounds lovely.

 Thank you Elias.

The Alien was my friend Brian. I sent him a simple backing track and asked him to record whatever he felt like playing. He sent me three tracks that he recorded on his own: soprano, tenor and flute. We both agreed the flute track wasn’t worthy.

In the meantime, I worked on the rest of the instruments. Once I toyed around with his tracks, I did a bit of splicing to give the effect of interaction. He’s rather consistent with his phrasing, which made it easy to work with.

Just dropped the latest project on Soundcloud. "On The Street Where You Live" is a song from the musical/movie "My Fair Lady". Alas, no Nords on this one. The Wurli is from Arturia.

* No real musicians were used on this project *

This kind of started as an excuse to use a ukulele sound into a song. That then led to the island drums, and it sort of rolled downhill from there. All instruments are software.

Your comments are welcome. I’m always looking to improve. This is a hobby and there is no commerce involved at all. Thanks for listening.

Finally! New Rusty Mike Music - The Chicken

Post by Rusty Mike »

After what seems like forever, I finally have something new.

The Chicken, composed by Pee Wee Ellis and made famous by bassist Jaco Pastorius.

This is an adaptation of the Kris Berg big band arrangement, noted by middle breakdown section preceding the solos. Most recordings and performances play at a breakneck tempo, but I decided to slow it down to give it more of a laid back funk flavor. I wanted to create something that sounded like it came out of a 60's session recording using period-appropriate instrumentation.

All instruments were played/programmed by me. I had a few goals for this recording:
  • Feature a jazz guitar and see how close I could come to programming a performance that sound like a human
  • Use a jazz brush drum kit to help emphasize the laid back groove and take the biting edge off
This recording features Orange Tree Samples’ Evolution Jazz Archtop Guitar and Fluffy Audio’s Jazz Drums - Brushes virtual instruments. I like the realism and character of these tools. Other instruments include Organs Tree’s Core Pear upright bass and UJam’s Groovemaster One for tambourine and hand claps.

Nord Spotting: After not using them in the past few recordings, I’m giving the Nord library little bit of love here. The piano is the Mellow Upright, pretty much straight out of the Electro 6D with just a wee bit of extra reverb and compression on the track. The organ is also from Electro, both upper and lower manuals. Again, just a small amount of track processing.

And yes, the piano solo is borrowed from another tune. It just seemed to work well with the groove ;-)

I hope it brings a smile, even if only for a moment. Thanks for listening.
