Control expression and sustain from other keyboard’s pedals

Post by RobHPG »

Currently, my Yamaha MODX pedals control expression and sustain of both the MODX and a Yamaha YC. Also, the MODX sends program changes to the YC. Depending on which program I choose, the MODX sustain and expression pedals will or will not affect the YC. I can control and store this on the YC PER PERFORMANCE (= Program) via Settings - Controllers - Receive SW - Expression/Sustain/Sostenuto/Soft (On/Off). I do not send any sound, it’s only controls.

Because I’m struggling to play organ on the YC’s Balanced Hammer Action keys, I’m considering replacing the YC by a Nord Electro 6d. I trust that I can globally control the Nord’s expression and sustain via MIDI IN. However, for me it’s important if I then can also control and store whether the MODX sustain and expression pedals affect the Nord’s sound - AT PROGRAM LEVEL.

Can anyone please let me know if the Nord Electro 6d can control (and store) per Program if the MIDI IN expression and sustain signal will affect its sound?

Many thanks for helping me decide on whether Nord Electro is right for me!

Hi and welcome to NUF,

you need to be more detailed in what you want to achieve.

NE6 doesn't have per Program settings of that kind, MIDI CC reception setting is Global, but I am pretty sure you can do that on your MoDX (i.e. configure the external Zone controlling the NE6 to prevent sending sustain and/or expression on a per Program basis) and that would be the right way to do it.

What you can do on NE6 on a per Program basis instead is to define if a Section has to respond to an External Keyboard at all or not (assigning it to Lower split with ExtKeybToLo function enabled), maybe that's enough for you?

A quick read of the (small) NE6 manual (at least the chapter dedicated to MIDI parameters and connection to external keyboards) would be beneficial for you to clarify any further doubt.

Thank you Maxpiano. Shame! I did read the manual, but couldn't find this information - probably because this apparently cannot be controlled per program. I'm not sure if it's possible, but I will dig into whether I can control this per MODX Performance setting in its MIDI settings.

I can confirm that the MODX can SET AND STORE if the sustain pedal and/or expression pedal MIDI signal is sent to a second keyboard PER PERFORMANCE (program), so I can comfortably order the Nord 6d 73 to complement the MODX :-)
