Hi,
I have a cheap UPS from APC (ES700). It is very important, because I have a lot of samples in my Roland-Fantom XR that need too much time for booting in case of outages. Important is a short reaction time an latency. I replace the battery about every 5-8 years. In an emergency, the box keeps the power on for about 3 minutes. If the battery is already older for about 45 seconds. That's usually enough to switch the fuse on :-)

Also I have the Furman AR-2306 Power Concitioning. That thing makes the sound clear and really powerful!
Cheers.

Hi, do you really mean that it makes a difference in the sound of the instrument? How?

been using the Furman rack style power conditioner M8x2 8 outlet for years. Built a stained wood casing for it to transport out of home studio. since upgrading to NS3, even though the green light is still on the Furman, I am interested in the UPS - CyberPower CP350 SLG, the size and price point are attractive and will be easier and lighter to transport than the long Furman unit.

One response advises don't use both. Does anyone use both? I don't know what order they'd get plugged in. I imagine with the newer technology of NS3 and UPS, it would be sufficient for me. I'm mostly concerned with protecting my Nord, no other add-ons. I power my MacBook and one powered speaker, pretty simple set up.

I'm just interested in a standby product:

Hello, I would suggest adding up the watts consumed by the powered speaker and your Stage 3 (25 watts) to see if it's within the 350-watt range of the CP350 - you want to size it to provide the output voltage and backup time provided in the specs. The UPS alone should work fine for surge protection, riding through momentary interruptions, and allowing time to shut down your Stage 3 for longer power outages. If you use the Furman, I would place it after the UPS. Take care.

thinking the same, thanks 'w' - I did add up the watts and they're minimal compared to protecting a pc, so I'm going to add a layer (ups) to my rig, just in case of a 'brown' or interruption. Naturally, with forecast of extreme weather and lightning, I proactively unplug. I feel something is better than nothing and if I can disable the reported annoying alarm on the ups, I'm ok with whatever protection it can provide, even if it fails after the first storm. All being said with my minimal knowledge of electricity, it seems like the least I can do. I don't require battery powered backup so much to have time to properly power down, but one never knows when the current decides to problematically fluctuate, until it does.

Very good practice - I should do it more often myself.

I always do the same. I am not an expert in electricity either, but I have heard many times that, while we do have devices that correct for voltage fluctuations and outages, there's literally nothing that can safely shield from a lightning strike, when the lightning hits close. I always unplug all the expensive stuff in my house when there's a storm. Luckily for me in Italy the storm season is shorter and less severe than what I think to be in the US!...

The idea is if something that big hits then the surge protector or power conditioner itself gets blown out and no more power to your other devices. So in the worse case you only have replace the surge protector or power conditioner not your good gear.

That's the theory but dealing with lightning is always risky because not all variables are known. There still a lot which is mysterious concerning the phenomenon of lightning even to physicists. I wouldn't risk my gear not even if there's a device in between that claims to handle the discharge of a thunder. I do use a double conversion UPS but that's for entirely different purposes.

At home I have a whole house surge suppressor in the main panel, then a Furman, then a line interactive UPS for my rack gear/synths. Definitely a “belt and suspenders” approach.
