Re: FM Synth deciphered

I certainly hope so. The FM-synth in my NS2 is the part that I really struggle to understand in a way that I can build a sound from scratch on my own. Even tweaking a factory preset that contains a FM-synth setting gets me confused... :?

The document in progress so far is great. :thanks: Continuation is greatly appreciated!

Synthesis on the Nord Stage 2 - 1.2 DRAFT.pdf

and some Programs to go with it:
NM DX EPiano6 MW.ns2p

NM DX EPiano7 MW.ns2p

NM DX Bass MW.ns2p

Thanks to everyone who gave feedback!
Also thanks to Mr_G_ - after your comments (via PM) I created a table of comparison for the DX7 and NS2 FM implementations, so hopefully it's a lot less misleading.

Nearly done with FM...

UPDATE: Added some MP3's . There should be a rule about doing this after coming back from the pub... Also I updated the EP7 program - the intention was to layer it with a rhodes from the Piano section... i forgot to mention that. Next update i will add it.

Any news about the tutorial for creating the basic acoustic instruments mentioned in the PDF?
type sounds: Strings, Reed, Flute, Brass, Pluck.
• SuperSaw – classic analog staple sound
• Disco Pop – demonstrates the use of filter resonance.
• Pad – we’ll finish up with a really fat and rich pad sound.
•Metallic/bell sound – this is largely what characterizes FM synths.
•Wavetables?

Re: FM Synth deciphered - An apology

Postby neolithic » 24 Jul 2018, 20:21

Hey. A few people PM'd me, and I see the odd post appear in reply to this thread. I feel ashamed not to have delivered on my promises, but life gets in the way ;-)

I figured I should respond here...

I haven't touched that guide in about 4 years. I got some great feedback, but I also found it took a lot more work than I originally anticipated, doing screenshots of waveforms, creating recordings, and working through step-by-step recipes.
Then I figured I should probably generalise it, something that doesn't just apply to the NS2, otherwise it's quite a bit of effort for a limited audience (even if it is an audience with great taste in gear ;-) So part of it turned into a general synth book - which is still a work in progress - kind of a back-burner project.
I also spent too much time being distracted by forums, and not enough time actually 'doing' - after a few troll experiences i stepped away.

TBH my workflow has changed a bit - I was impressed by the NS2 for the first year - "new gear syndrome", but ultimately I found the synth section pretty limited and stopped using it in favour of other hardware. The NS2 makes a great controller, and that's what I mainly use it as - I only use the piano section and Hammond sim as actual sound sources. It's still a great and powerful synth section, considering it only has a few controls.
So now i've been poked once again by a PM, so I will at least re-read the guide - but I know better than make any promises :-)

Anyway - who even uses the NS2 these days? now there are newer, shinier models available... I recall that @Marlowes sent his into the attic long ago ;-)

so anyway - keep up the music making - you are (mostly) a good crowd on here!
And now for something completely different...

Welcome back Neo! Great to see you round here again! While I totally understand that forums can be a real headache, I personally hope you find some time to partecipate once in a while, you were missed!

(btw, I also still use the NS2...albeit in a new, less scratched EX package) ;)

Great document. Helps a lot to learn FM. I know this is a very old post, but wondering what you think about the FM implementation in the NS3
