Strange MIDI Issue with Roland JD-08 Boutique

Post by Klangwerk »

Hi friends, I need your advice and help!

Situation:
NordStage 2, ExternSection Slot A Midi ch. 6 Roland JD-08
ExternSection Slot B Midi ch. 5 Roland XV-3080

I have only Slot B activ and the ExternSection is on (lids on).
I play some keys and the Roland JD-08 (in Slot A) sounds with tones, that are not in the soundpatch. Totaly different sound.

So, why sounds the JD-08, when he is not "connected", because I play in Slot B and not Slot A?
Why is not the Soundpatch sounding, but other tones from the JD-08?

When I turn off the ExternSection nothing sounds (that is ok)
When I play only Slot A, the JD-08 sounds as it should, nothing else.
But when I activate Slot A and B, than I hear both synths (is ok), but in addition the strange sound from the JD-08 (over the Slot B).

How can the Slot A Synth (JD-08) sounds, if no connection is active??!? Strange

I know, the JD-08 has strange Midi-Configuration-Possibilities.
I have a global Channel: set to Channel 4
Midi Channel Part A: set to Channel 6 ( I play part A)
Midi Channel Part B: set to Channel 15

because I don't neet Ch 4 and 15, there are not used

For Information, here are the MSB and LSB orders, if someone is looking for:

Bank A (A11 bis A88): LSB = 0, PC = 0 bis 63
Bank B (B11 bis B88): LSB = 0, PC = 64 bis 127
Bank C (C11 bis C88): LSB = 1, PC = 0 bis 63
Bank D (D11 bis D88): LSB = 1, PC = 64 bis 127

Thank you for your help in advance!

Helmuth :o

Unless you are using something to explicitly filter out messages on MIDI ch 5, they will reach the JD-08, when playing Extern B. My guess is that there is something assigned to MIDI channel 5, that you simply did not notice.

The setup. NS2 midi out --> Roland XV-3080 in, Midi Thru --> Roland D-05 Midi In, Midi Out --> Roland JD-08 Midi In
Channel 5 Channel 11 Channel 6

update: I connected the Roland JD-08 directly with the NS2. The same result with the JD-08! There is a sound, which is not included in the saved patch.

Have you tried to start from a blank (Init) program and then rebuild the 2 External sections settings? Or to put a computer between the NS2 and the JD-08 and monitor the MIDI traffic (to ensure the NoteOn messages are only on the desired channels)?

PS: I am assuming you have Global Channel set to OFF or USBxx on the NS2.

Hi Helmuth,

from all that is written I cannot say for sure whether the unwanted sound comes from a nord sound engine or from the JD itself. You may try with setting the JD‘s „local“ to OFF, then its own sounds should not occur anymore.

Cheers

Edit: I guess I‘ve just mixed the instruments - the JD doesn‘t have keys at all, right? Sorry.

Servus Tasten-Bert,

thank you. I will try it. I didn't think about it, because the JD-08 is a Expander without keys. But I will check it out if there is a local on/off.
Cheers

Could be a solution.
I will try to start with a empty program and make the connections via Extern Section to find out if the problem still exists.
I have no software to monitor the Midi traffic, Sorry.

update Bert:

there is no possibility to change local on/off.
I've set the Midi-settings (Point 4) to Midi.
