Legacy Nord Stage specs ?

Postby trumelpuut » 02 Jan 2022, 13:33

Hi.
I'd like to buy an older Nord Stage for the garage (the only room where I don't have one already), but I can't find the infos I'm looking for in Clavia's specs pages for legacy products.

Could someone tell me which was the first Stage to sport 512 Mb of piano memory, please ? Did the very first Nord Stage have 512 Mb already ?
And was it already capable of layering 2 piano sounds? (yeah i know, but I'm only happy when stacking acoustic pianos)

Thanks & happy new year

Wikipedia puts the Stage 1 and Stage1 EX at 128MB and 256 MB, respectively.

Stage 2 at 500 MB.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nord_Stage

The basic structure of the Stage has always been two panels, so all of the engines (organ/piano/synth) can have two instances running in parallel.

See this chart:
https://www.nordkeyboards.com/products/ ... ison-chart
The NSEX had 256MB
The NS2 had 500MB
The NS2EX had 1GB
The NS3 has 2GB

Their business plan is pretty clear, the NS8 will have 2TB. Start saving.

Thanks guys !

Yeah I love Clavia but their memory upgrade policy reeks of greed. (I still fall for it though)

Remember that this isn’t normal Flash memory. It’s a type of memory that can be accessed at speeds comparable to RAM — so samples do not need to be loaded; they are instantaneously available in full polyphony as soon as you switch the program.

This type of flash is (last I checked) about 10x more expensive than fast SSD storage. It’s a considerable cost factor when designing these machines.

Yeah I suspected that. Then I thought it's a flimsy excuse. But maybe you're right after all.
