help me get a good funky clav sound on 6d

Postby playsabadguitar » 03 Dec 2021, 15:39

Trying to get a good funk clavinet sound on the electro 6d. The clav sounds in the piano module sound kind of thin and adding wah seems to dampen it rather than thicken it up. I blended one with a string quartet sound from the synth module. That helped and it sounds cool, but it is not that classic funky sticky clav sound that I am looking for.

I am real noob here, so any tips are appreciated.

Hi-

I will always use the EQ and find the fat mid-range frequency and boost that. Also, I add drive once that frequency is boosted. The Amp models can add different characters as well-

Also, you might explore samples to layer with it. A punchy synth-clav sound mixed in an octave lower can add a bunch of unique character in a hurry. Chorus works well for me. Although a lot can be done on the 6D, on the NS3 you can use the same technique with more layers to create the World's Ballsiest Clav Sound (tm), which I use on the intro to "Use Me" (Bill Withers). It gets a lot of attention.
I think I have gear issues ....

Add an amp sim and a touch of distortion.

It can all be done with the clav itself, using the filters and all the effects. Remember that an original clav was basically like a keyboard-triggered electric guitar and sounds flat unless you use effects. I don't have a 6D, though the NS3 has basically the same clav engine and I can get a really funky sound using multiple effects applied in different ways.

As others have said:

EQ - mid swept to the top gives bite, to the bottom gives body.
Amp sim/overdrive - just on the edge of breakup
And - most important to me - velocity response to all lights on.

All responses above have been helpful. I layered in a OrchStrings Pizzicato. Punching the mids helped a lot. The octave down on the strings synth was awesome.

I am much happier with the sound. Not crazy about the wah effect. I bought a $40 expression pedal. I assumed I didn’t need to splurge on the expression pedal because the effects are in the board. Now I am considering buying an actual wah.

Bill withers Use Me is pretty much what I am going for.

No wah at all on the "Use Me" clav.
Super dry.

Note that it's played in parallel octaves.
