Thank you everyone for your responses but unfortunately nothing has worked.
Today I managed to boot the piano and tried to update the OS. This got some way through until I got a response saying ‘no reply from synth’.
The update stopped there and I unplugged and tried again with the same response.
Now I can’t even turn on the piano so stuck at where I was originally.
Any ideas?

For repair, probably.

Are you doing this from a desktop or laptop? And if the latter, is it plugged into mains power?

Re: Piano 4 error code
You're on the right path:
(1) make sure USB cable and computer are working properly
(2) use the "force update" key sequence (as described above)
(3) find a more techie friend to make sure you're doing things correctly
If you got any sort of message on the display, you should be able to recover from that point forward. If it stops somewhere else along the line, that's progress.
The other thing we've been seeing on this forum is loose cables upon shipping, especially in the UK. Really rough treatment loosens the ribbon cable connectors, which need a reseat. Obviously, I don't think you'd be comfortable doing this, but it's not a serious problem when it happens.

Hi,
it looks like an old Dell Monitor which makes me feel you could run it on an old PC with a maybe outdated Windows version on it. I‘ve experienced problems on WIN 7 and older. What is your system speced?
Cheers from Germany

My laptop is relatively new and has windows 10. Have tried all suggestions so thanks for those but I keep getting the same error message on the updater

Have you tried with a different computer too (another of yours or a friend's, if the "force update" key sequence still works of course)?
EDIT: as others already wrote, trying different cables and ports is also something to do.

Re: Piano 4 error code
Actually, I've learned to suspect cables (and computers) *first*, and *then* question the instrument. Good for debugging in general: if something is weird, first unplug everything that's attached: midi, pedals, etc. My last gremlin was a sticky button that somehow had a beverage spilled on it when I was not looking. One sticky button can make many others not work.

Honestly it seems to be a hardware problem.
If youyr NP4 is under warranty, don't waste your time an call your retailer.
