Nord Grand Action - Problem with repetition

Postby delmor » 23 Aug 2020, 22:31

Hello Nord Enthusiasts,

Just joined the forum, happy to meet you all here :)

I purchased the Nord Grand two weeks ago, my first Nord. I have a Kawai VPC-1 (love the piano action, but it's really heavy and you need to carry your computer around for the samples) and a Roland FP-90. Really fell in love with the Nord Grand, and I am generally very, very happy with it. Coming from classical piano education, playing a lot of live jazz events/concerts, the Nord Grand was pretty much what I was waiting for. Generally loving it, although I am a bit disappointed that Nord acted a little bit "tight" in regards of supplying I/O connections, especially in regards of using the Speakers (which I also got) for monitoring from outside sources.

However, there is a problem I noticed pretty soon: Some keys in the In the bass - in my case e.g. the F1 - the action, respectively what comes out if the PA/Speakers, do not respond consistently. When I play a fast octave tremolo (or repeating the F1 quickly a couple of times), the first note/tone is inarguably stronger/louder than the following repetitions. Feels very strange and irritating, and only concerns a few keys. Could this be an action issue which can be fixed mechanically?

Has anybody else noticed similar problems? Guess I am taking it back to my local dealer where I got it from and see what he thinks about it...

Greetings
Johnny

Does this happen with all pianos?

Could you try to octave shift or transpose and see whether it is related to the physical key or the tone it sounds?

From your description, it sounds like one physical key may be miscalibrated. As far as I know, the keys have 3 sensors, and I guess that if you do fast repetitions, the first (top) sensor will only be used for the first note whereas other notes only sound via the two lower sensors. If they are placed incorrectly or somehow bit calibrated correctly, out could potentially be there reason.

What if you do the repetition making sure the key is completely released.

Also, are adjacent keys equal in volume compared to the F1 or louder/weaker?

Thanks for your reply!

Adjacent keys behave differently (aka normal), so it seems to be a problem exclusively isolated to a few keys, which would confirm your approach that it is an technical sensor issue. Even if I make sure that the key Is completely released before repetition, the problem still persist.

I will dig in further tomorrow, hopefully I can make a trip to the supplier where I got it from, they have a North Grand on display to play on. I will try that one to see if it behaves differently and will post the results here!

Edit: oh, and concerning to your first question: yes, it only happens when playing on the North! ;-)

Ok, good luck with the next steps :-)

My first question was more to which Nord piano sample - I assume you test both the royal 3d, the white grand, etc? And are they all in xl size? And if so, do the l behave the same way, etc.

Hi, the same problem, I bought the piano 3 days ago, did you somehow manage to solve the mistake?

This sounds oddly familiar to the ongoing issue with the Nord Stage 3. The first note in rapid sequence would cause the first not to blast very loudly. I referred to it as the Nord "Bonk". It took 4 years for it to be fixed on the Stage 3 I bought in 2017. There are videos on YouTube showing the issue.

I just got a Nord Grand last week and guess what? BONK...lower third of the keybed, playing notes in fast sequence, first note is full volume. Same damn thing and It's even more noticeable on the Grand. It's not the keybed, it's the keyboard. I tolerated it on the Stage 3 expecting it to be fixed quickly. I mostly play piano when I gig so this is not good and I'm not willing to wait for 4 years for get a solution. I'm sending the Grand back and will just go with the heavier Kawai MP11se. And, I'll have an extra $1000 in my pocket.
