Referring to Nord Piano 5 but presumably applies to other models, give or take. Where you're not using a layer in a program, using the sample synth only for example, can you assign nothing to the unused layer?
Otherwise when you use Sound Manager to backup a program as a bundle it brings unnecessary data with it. In the case of an XL piano sound accidently left selected but unused, for example, it can be a very large file.

Yeah that seems like the best workaround.

I use the clavinet for this situation. I believe it uses the least memory.
