Why did they discontinue the CD2?

Postby pgustoso » 17 Jul 2021, 16:11

Why did Clavia discontinue the manufacturing of there Nord CD2 organ?
Are they planning on revising this model for future production?
I really think Nords have one of the best Hammond & Leslie emulations.
Hope they will produce a future double manuel organ that has more features including having some important extra sounds and less bugs than there previous models.
With sporting a layout similar to a vintage Hammond. The layout shoud have actual drawbars not sliders with drawbar caps attached to the top of the slider also swap out the small buttons with rocker type switches and knobs etc.
Even having the reverse preset keys at the left.
That would be great but It may not be feasible and would possibly be too costly.

There are models from Hammond, Viscount, MAG, and Crumar with more authentically "vintage Hammond" aesthetics/ergonomics, so the market is not starved for them. Nord's advantage may be in being smallest and lightest in weight. Adding reverse keys and true (deep) drawbar mechanisms would negate that.

But to why something is discontinued, usually because it wasn't selling well enough, OR it was selling well enough to be replaced with an imminent updated model. Sometimes it could be shortage/unavailability of a component. But in the end, only Nord knows. ;-)

Because Viscount's emulation's (slightly) better on several aspects, whilst Crumar and HX3's much better: there wouldn't be a single good reason to buy a double manual Nord as things stand (at least until Clavia improves the Leslie, percussion and C/V simulations, which were last upgraded back in 2013), unless you absolutely need electric and church organs along with a B3 simulation; but that's an extremely small niche, which would be satisfied by a Mojo 61 coupled with the optional lower manual. Imho, Nord shouldn't waste time and resources for a C2D successor and just release an optional lower manual for the Electro 61, just like Crumar and Hammond already did.

Four sets of drawbars in a dual manual keyboard that weighs 35 lbs gave the C2D a strong appeal to some. And you can always improve the Leslie by putting a Vent on it, and possibly improve on whatever else by using it to trigger B-3X, VB3, or you other software of choice, so you can improve the areas where you see it as weak. Whereas on the other boards you mention, you can't susbseuently do anything to reduce their travel weight or add extra sets of drawbars you may want.

Also, the Nord brand is probably more available than the others at brick and mortar stores, so that's appealing for the ability to try it before you buy, and often to have a local place who will facilitate the servicing for you if you ever need it. (Just in general, at least in the U.S., the Nord is probably the most easily servicable of the current 2-manual boards. Maybe Hammond too.)

All this cloning around.....many with real tonewheel Hammonds and Leslies find amusement at all the small companies niching their way into oblivion, knowing full well the old beast will still be making music when all this post 1996 garbage is in recycling.
Could give a rats rear end how much better one waste of money is over the next.Got a great deal on a virtually new C2D in 2017 that had been in a made for TV movie as a prop.Best sounding 35 pound keyboard in the collection.
1/4" speaker out drives this 142 just about right! Well done Nord.Almost as good as my A100....nah,never!

Nord lost a lot of ground in their organ model. So they'd have to update their hammond and leslie algo to be on par with HX3, XK5 or the crumar. I think they won't release any new C2 models.
