Which Nord piano to get, when weight is important

Postby kristinlomholt7 » 13 Sep 2021, 11:26

Hi everybody!
I've got a Nord 3 piano (88 keys). The piano sound is great on that and I enjoy all the other great sounds too + the Hammond B3 for download.
I am on my way to get another Nord piano for a choir that I play for. Here my keyboard is problematic because of the weight. The new piano will be on the road a lot and I need something considerable lighter in weight, compared to my Nord 3.

I'm looking for:
Piano with as many keys as possible and with a great piano sound.
A decent hammer action feel.
Weight: I need to get down to half the weight (cant find weight anywhere of my 88 keys Nord -?? but its very heavy, I guess around 30 kg?)
I'm quite confused about the digital/electro/piano differences -so that doesn't help the situation either... (where do I get the best key action and sound?

What is the best compromise in Nord?
Looking forward to see if anyone can help! -i would so appreciate it so much, as the web stores don't seem to be able to help...
Have a great day!
Kristin (in Copenhagen)

Your Nord Piano 3 "only" weighs 18 kgs, which is not very light of course, but still quite portable when compared to other brands, which can reach 25-30 kilos or more.
You can find all the data about your Nord Piano 3 (and all other Nords) on their website
https://www.nordkeyboards.com/products/ ... cification

Among Nords, the only way to go down to about "half the weight" is to choose a so-called HP model (Hammer Portable). Those use a different action which is considerably lighter, around 11-12 kilos. However, I strongly recommend to try it out in person before buying, or buying from a shop with a good return policy. That's because the HP action is quite different from the HA in your NP3, many people find it perfectly decent, many others hate it and can't use it for advanced piano playing. It all depends on your experience, technique and how difficult the repertoire you have to play.

If 12 kilos is still too much and you need an even lighter piano, your only choice is to look at other brands.

Hi Kristin,

nice to hear from you again. How did that idea with an iPad as sound generator end? Or was it the setlist thing?

As far as your new question is concerned I feel this is not easy. If the 18 kg of a Nord Piano 3 make you feel carrying a 30 kg instrument, then even a 15 or 16 kg piano wouldn‘t make much difference. A new Nord Piano 5 with 73 keys is around that weight.

What I wouldn‘t do is considering an HP keybed to be a good substitute - I can‘t play piano tunes on it.

There is a Studiologic SL73 available which has about 12 kg, but no sound onboard. The iPad idea pops up again …

Sunny regards from Germany

I thought/think it has weighted hammer action. Cheers

Nord HP keybed ( = Fatar TP100) is a weighted hammer action by all means, just mechanically different from TP/40 so also the feeling is different (different distribution of weight and levers)

Aside from and Electro 6 HP (just 9.3 Kg), there isn't anything lighter on the market, much less with the same sound quality Nord offers (as it's been pointed out, any equivalent, sound-wise, piano will always be heavier than any Nord product). Try out the 73-keys electro with Hammer Portable action and see if it fits your needs. If you don't find it comfortable, I'm afraid you'll have to make do with your Piano 3.

What about Nord Piano 5 73? 3kg less - 73 keys only, though...
Nord's 88 key pianos are very light for their feature set and 88 keys imho... :)
Sometimes I'd love to have a Stage Compact with 1/2 the weight tbh :D
