Home sound system for Stage 3

Post by nordastic »

Hello,

I have at home a pair of Rokit 5 with a Focursite 2i2, pretty minimal setup.

I'd like to connect my nord stage 3 to a simple mixer to mix both Focursite and Nord audio.
What I'm not sure is about balanced sound?

Could someone help me there? Do I need a DI for this?

The cable for connecting the nord is going to be 4 meters long.

Thanks

If you have a mixer with inserts, then after you plug your Nord into the normal line input, take another TS cable, push it into that insert input one click (not all the way down). Then run that cable into your Focusrite line input.

If I understood your question correctly, you want to be able to use hear your Nord through your monitors without turning on your computer. This will accomplish that scenario. Then, when you want to record something with your focusrite, then you have that option as well and you won't need to unplug and reroute cables each time. I believe this is what you are wanting to accomplish. Hopefully this helps.

Hello,

Yes, what I want to achieve is hearing nord audio without turning on my computer.

What I am confused is about balanced vs unbalanced.
Focursite output is balanced but nord's is unbalanced.

How do I navigate through this?

Thank you very much!

Sorry, I should have explained further. You will then need to run 2 TRS cables from your Focusrite output into your mixer on their own channels.

I have my Audio Interface running into channels 13 & 14

Hopefully, that clears it up for you.

Hello,

Thanks for the clarification.

So the nord connected to the mixer without a DI is a good sound quality solution?

Thanks!

It works perfect. But, you should know that at least with my brand of mixer, all of the audio going from the insert to the audio interface is PRE EQ. So, that just means it is a flat tone going into your DAW when you are going to record something. I am not sure of how other brands of mixers handle EQ or built in effects with channel inserts, but I would surmise it's the same across all platforms. I'm not any type of audio engineer by any means.

So, you'll definitely want to add EQ, Reverb, Compression, etc etc in your DAW to the tracks that you record. But, you're probably already doing that so it's not a big deal.

No DI needed.

If all you want to hear is one Nord in stereo while practicing, but also want the ability to record your instrument with your DAW in stereo, then your minimum requirements when shopping for a mixer is at least 4 channels and two of them must have inserts. And of course you'll need to pan each channel to the left/right for stereo.

You might want to use a DI box and a balanced cable if you have to bridge several meters (> 10?) between the Nord and the mixer. Balanced cables are good to prevent you from getting interfering signals into the sound on longer tracks. At home probably no need for that.

Hi guys,

At the end I bought a cheap passive monitor. It's cheaper and does perfectly the job !
