Nord HP (Electro 5) keybed defect; repeated notes

Postby alexmarinojR » 07 May 2021, 19:16

Hi, Nordies! I've been having the problem for a long time and I thought I had a defective unit, but since I heard from like 5 people through the years who had a similar problem I wanted to check if many people suffer with this keybed defect.

I'm going to start from the top. Let's say you want to play repeated notes, and that is not even very fast, like the come together solo or something, pretty basic, right? So you strike staccato notes and most of them either don't register at all, or are with weakened volume. For me the problem extends though. If I play the note very staccato and fast like a brass stab or something I very often hear repeated notes - meaning that the keybed goes back to default placement, and bounces back in so much that it activates a "stutter" second note. I can literally see it . So the problem seems to lie in the fact that the action is slow, and also loosened so much that it actually either doesn't bounce back fast enough to activate my second note or in the case of a single fast staccato strike sounds like a delay.. The only way to address that so far is to play with a different technique, but I could never get used to it and it's nearly impossible especially playing percussion type of stuff like Clavinets, stabs, staccatos and so on.
Maybe it's time to go to a professional keybed techician and maybe he can do something, but since it's my main board I don't have the option to take it to the doctor. :thanks:

you will never be able to play that sort of material on the HP key bed. You need synth action to do that. I'd suggest finding a small midi synth action keyboard that you can add to your Nord to play the clav, horn stabs, staccatos, etc.

+1 for the judging of the HP keybed. In fast repetition things, it's the weakest of the different Nord Stage and Electro keybeds. It has one major pro: the portability.
Stage 3 Compact (Rev.B 2.1 - OS 2.60) - Kawai VPC1 / Yamaha CP33 - Hall of Fame & NeoVent2 - Behringer Flow-8 - K&M stands 18820+18811 / 18953+18952 - Samsung tablet with MobileSheetsPro & AirTurn Duo200 - QSC K8.2s / Fischer InEars

Yep, I think that the HP keybed is very ´difficult‘. In my eyes it’s far less than a compromise between the semiweighted waterfall keybeds on the one hand which allow fine synth solos and Hammond glides and the weighted HA Hammer Action pianolike keybeds on the other hand which give you a bit of a real piano feeling. With an HP it’s not easy to get close to the one or the other.
Mentioning Come together you mean the Beatles song, don‘t you? I play the Rhodes on my NE5D waterfall without any difficulties.
Cheers from Germany

I guess you all have a point, but for me it's not a compromise , but a bad design if that's supposed to be normal and not a defect. If you can't play a simple 16th repeated same note, let alone a 32nd, it is very poor indeed and should not be a problem for a professional keyboard which is north of a 1000$+. That's exactly why I gave the example with the Come Together song from the Beatles, it's a simple not too fast 16th repeated notes, and please don't tell me I should upgrade to be able to do that, it's laughable :D Yes, I've played on the waterfall and also the HA action from nord and don't have this problem there. Take care!
