Contoling E6 from external keyboard

Post by Lizard King »

I have the MIDI set up. I can send note on/off, volume, program change, etc. but I'm having trouble with the footswiches.
I'd like to use one set of footswitchs connected to my main keyboard. I'd like to send oran sustain and send rotary fast/slow to the E6 from the footswitches connected to my main keyboard.

I can't get the sustain to work on either MIDI 64 or 47.

I can get the rotary speed to almost work. It seems like if I set my footswitch as a toggle switch I can switch between stop and fast on MIDI 108. This makes the footswitch unusable with my main keyboard as it expects a momentary switch. If I hold down the switch it toggles between Stop and Fast on the E6.

Is there anyway to send sustain to the E6 organ and send rotary slow/fast to the E6 organ?

Thanks!

Connect a computer to the NE6 and install a midi monitor (if you haven't already) and press the sustain pedal and the rotary switch (or pedal) and check what is sent from the NE6. You just need to send back the same commands to the board as it sends itself, on the right channel of course :-)

Check your settings on the NE6 also. Sustain can be set to also toggle the rotary. Make sure that isn't enabled if you want separate functions for the pedals. Also enable sustain in the organ section if you really need that (button press on the board and make sure you have that with the programs you use). These last things are probably already ok, so just mentioning them in case you accidentally forgot to check.

I just picked up my first Nord so I'm not at all used to the interface ;-)
The latching switch seemed pretty odd for the rotary speed. I probably don't have the Nord set up correctly - I didn't try plugging the pedals into the Nord. D'OH!

All good things to try.

THANKS!!!!

UPDATE:

When I step on the sustain pedal connected to my master controller the E6D's Sustped light turns on in the Organ section...but nothing sustains. According to the manual Shift + Octave Shift Up activates a sustain pedal. I have no idea where to enter that key press combination. There is no Octave Shift Up button. there is a Shift button and an Octave Up button. Pressing those causes the light to light up but no sustain.

According to the manual You can select the TYPE of ROTOR PEDAL. On the 6D you can select Open, Closed, Half Moon, Auto. I don't know that it matters but there IS NO HALF MOON option in the menu of my D model.

The ROTOR FUNC seems to be defective. It works as Rotor Hold even when Rotor Toggle is selected.

Do I need to open up a ticket with Nord? Either there manual is wrong or their software is wrong.

Preliminary: have you updated the NE6 to the latest OS?

Then, to your points:

1) the Half Moon option may not be presented if no HM is connected, however if you are controlling the Rotary via MIDI those settings are not relevant, it all depends on how you set it on the master and sending the appropriate value of the associated MIDI CC 108

2) the key combination to press in order to activate Sustain/CtrlPed on Organ section is Shift+OctUp (yes manual is incorrect here, you may open a ticket to highlight that to Nord, but it is an evident typo and looking at the panel text it is quite obvious what the correct button should be)

3) have you checked that the master is sending the CC64 on the right channel, i.e. the one you have configured on the NE6 for it (EXTERNAL KBD parameter of MIDI settings)

1. Yes. I updated to the latest OS
2. The text doesn't say the MOON option is only available when the switch is connected. I know it has no bearing whatsoever on my issue but it seemed indicative of bad OS.
3. I had tried the assumed keypress combination before but I must not have saved it or held my teeth right or something. Suddenly the sustain is working.

The rotary is not working but I'm following up on it.

I guess I found the problem and it's with my master controller. In order to use the E6 rotor function as toggle I actually have to set the master controller pedal type as toggled. Unfortunately this causes the other keyboards in my rig to blow up so it looks like I'll either have to press the key on the Nord to change speed or add a third foot pedal.

At least I know what's going on.

Thanks!!!

The range on the Rotor switch is not standard. The CC number is 108 and you would expect 0 to be slow and 127 fast. However, from memory the value 43 = slow and 85 = fast. That is certainly the case if you use a switch connected to the dedicated rotor socket.

I would expect something different: The Nords are sending (maybe) 43 and 85 for slow and fast, but would interpret anything incoming between 0..63 as slow and 64..127 as fast. Which would mean: no problems with the value range.

Hi - I struggled with this: Yamaha YC-88 MIDI Controller, Electro6HP MIDI slave, Yamaha FC5 foot switch connected to the Assignable Port on the YC88 and assigned for Rotor Fast/Slow.

The FC5 switches (latching) the rotary speaker between fast and slow. I have not been successful in using the single FC5 connected to the YC88 to control the rotors on both machines via MIDI. At one point, I had two FC5's - one for the YC88 and one for the E6 to control the rotary speakers on each.

So, I used a simple 1/4" Y-cable (splitter): (1) 1/4" F x (2) 1/4" F. I cabled the 1/4" M from the FC5 into the Y cable, and then (1) 1/4" M - 1/4" M patch to the YC88 Assignable and (1) 1/4" M - 1/4" M patch into the E6 rotor pedal port. Low-tech for sure, but works like a champ and cost under $10 and it works for both machines whether they are MIDI'd together or not. (see my post for the MIDI on/off footswitch, if you are interested).

Caveats:
- if you are using the rotary speakers on both machines, they must be sync'd manually: e.g., both "Low" speed initially, otherwise they will be out of phase, one machine fast, one slow and then vice-versa when you hit the pedal... I have some programs stored which save either a fast or slow setting, so you have to be aware.
- two pedals gave me the most flexibility, but you have to be sitting to hit both pedals at the same time
- kind of a hack workaround for something that I should be able to figure out; a humbling episode for which I've had to admit defeat, but i'll get over it...
