General Discussion of the Nord Stage (EX), Nord Stage 2 (EX), and Nord Stage 3 Synths, FAQ, Troubleshooting etc.

Re: Simple answers that I don´t find

Nord Stage owners who have never programmed ANY synth before would have to go through a basic learning curve of understanding things like waveform selection, envelopes, filter cutoff/resonance, LFO shape/speed/depth, etc., so I'm not surprised that there are Stage owners who don't know these things, who use the boards for pianos, organs, and synth presets, without programming their own synth sounds. But anyone who is already familiar with those concepts or has ever programmed any synth sound on a Korg/Roland/Yamaha/Kurzweil workstation can program on a Nord in no time.

I believe most of Nord users are not sound "designers", and mostly (live) music performers (at least for Stage users) that just need the right sound combination for their own use. They also find it quite easy to quickly setup programs that "do the job". Thanks also to the Nord community to share sounds and samples, as well as Nord to have such a fantastic Editor to make your own sample like a breeze.

I don't blame them for not exploring the Synth engine : I also find myself lazy in downloading samples that could certainly be recreated using the synthesis inside my Stage. But when you don't need it or if you think it's too time consuming, then many don't make the extra mile. Good thing is that you know this is somewhere inside and that you may one day take a look into it.

In the end, if the machine (whatever brand or model) fits your requirements or you have fun with it, then I'd say this is the most important !

Recently, I took a KingKorg and am totally discovering the VA world. Yes, this is facinating and a great addition to my Stage !

I know it's late, as your stage might have already arrived, but did you ever consider the nord wave 2 instead of the stage? if you are more into programming synthy sounds maybe it could be more suitable for you. It's a little cheaper also...

I considered the wave, but it lacks the drawbars. I use that pretty often. And I understood it has 4 sections. This was a bit too few for my expectations.
And yes, the stage has arrived yesterday.

It has been discussed numberous times that you can not have the best of everything in just one keyboard. If you take the stage you get organ, piano and synth all in one portable package but you have to compromise with less features in each section. If you want 100% of everything then you will have to get multiple dedicated instruments. That is a lot of money and you forget portability in that case. Enjoy your time exploring your new toy!!!

To Alex' point, that even though the Stage has 6 engines, only two of them can be synth/sample. On the Wave, all 4 of them can be synth/sample/FM/Wavetable.

If lack of drawbars is a deal-breaker, then you must get the Stage 3. The Wave does not have organ modeling or access to the Nord Piano Library.

though you can connect, for example, an iPhone or iPad to the Stage and get two more (non-Nord) synth/sample sounds if needed via the EXT function.

Guys, I am comparing this to my pretty old Kurzweil PC3. Please don´t feel offended, but the Nords are quite inferior to the options that I have there. The Nords are nice laid out and well built, but in terms of flexibility and "what is on the menue" quite basic. I have to contradict Alex78: With a Nord indeed I need more than one instrument to cover everything, with a PC3 I did not. Please don´t ask my why I do not simply stick with the Kurz - I already said they loose reliability, and this is a big nogo for a gigging (hobby)musician.
But I admit, the quality of the sounds are good to very good, also the synth sounds pretty good and a bit better regarding the filters, than the VA of the Kurz. But still, it lacks in flexibility, options to take control of various modulation methods, number of voices, FX-section is good but mini, Organ is a slighly bit better than on the Kurz, but there is not much in between. Pianos are superior, but considering the generation when the PC3 was built, no surprise. But, believe it or not, the sound characteristics of both instruments are not so far apart from each other, and that is why I start to like the Nord Stage 3. My impression of it is: There is not much there, but the things that are there are of high quality. And all is packed in a lightweight, sturdy case, good to lug around to gigs.
Edit: I want to add, I don´t own an Ipad or Iphone, I am not into Apple at all, and I won´t start setting up additional stuff on stage than I already have to. I have enough other stuff there and won´t rely on extra devices to complete soundsets that should reside inside the keyboard. I am a bit strange in this regard.
Edit II: And yes, thank you, I have fun with it and already programmed 10 sounds or so. I don´t need 3 weeks. Now I will figure out now how to get them in a package on the computer.

I wouldn't say either is inferior to the other, it just depends on the task at hand. As I said earlier, "Kurzweils are extremely flexible, but you have to dive deep for many things. Nords are less flexible, but the things people most often need to do are available without deep diving... that's the trade-off...They're both great boards, but they excel at different things."

Kaffimusic wrote:I have to contradict Alex78: With a Nord indeed I need more than one instrument to cover everything, with a PC3 I did not.
It depends on your particular needs. But yes, if I wanted to gig with the most flexible single board, it wouldn't be a Nord... and especially with travel weight being an issue for me, it would probably be a Kurzweil PC4. But I'd still be losing some of what the Nord provides. Both for pre-gig sound setup time saving and at-the-gig real-time sound manipulation, there's a real advantage to being able to simply reach for the dedicated filter/envelope/LFO synth controls, drawbars, and effects controls. No need to menu dive, or assign the controls to the parameters you want them to control in a given Setup... it's all just right there and works immediately. Some players would find that more valuable than maximum flexibility, others would find the reverse, neither approach is universally better or inferior.
