Triple pedal data pass through?

Post by mstryker »

Hi: I have a Nord Electro 6 HP. I’m considering the purchase of a virtual piano product like Ravenscroft paired with Logic Pro for home studio use.

I understand that the Nord triple pedal is not compatible with this particular instrument, which I assume means that the sustain pedal will work but the internal piano sounds will be unaffected by the 2 other pedals.

Is this assumption correct?

Also, since there is only a single 1/4 in input cord on the triple pedal that this goes into the sustain jack on compatible Nord keyboards.

Is this assumption correct.

Here’s the real question: if I plugged this pedal into the sustain jack on my Nord, using the keyboard as a controller triggering a virtual piano, will the pedal data make it to the virtual instrument and be able to take advantage of all that the piano program has to offer.

Thanks in advance for any information and/or other workarounds offered up.

Michael

Hi Michael and welcome,

I am sorry but your assumption is not correct, the Nord Triple pedal cannot work at all with the Nord Electro(s), because the NE Sustain Pedal input is designed for an on/off switch on a mono (TS) jack only (while the Nord Triple pedal uses a TRS and a somewhat "complex" wiring and resistors+switches network behind to handle the 3 pedals with dynamics and half-pedaling detection on the sustain pedal)

Hi and welcome to NUF :)

I don’t own an Electro 6 but use the triple pedal on my various Nord Stages. There is a special setting on the Nord Stage for the triple pedal and another one if a single sustain pedal has been connected. I assume that the setting “triple pedal” will cause the operating system of the Stage to have it’s signal interpreted correctly from the three pedals and the “sustain” setting will treat the signal as single sustain only. I therefore think that, if the Electro 6 does not have an option to choose a triple pedal setting, just simple sustain pedal signals be operated and transmitted, and the rest will be ignored if the triple pedal or parts of it would work at all. Just my guess ....

P.S.: Max was faster ....

Can't speak for the NE6 but I was very surprised to find that my NE5 responds to the "soft" pedal from my VPC1 over MIDI.

From memory I needed to tweak some VPC1 settings to make the sustain pedal work nicely with the Nord.

That works probably because the Piano engine is probably the same as the Nord Stage/Piano so it responds to all the 3 MIDI CCs of the pedals (but Sostenuto needs to be enabled while Soft is "always on")

A continuous/half damper pedal (like the Roland DP-10) should work on your VSTs if you attach it with something like the MIDI Expression adapter from audiofront.
