I remember on the 5D, you couldn't split two from the same engine, such as the clav and the rhodes at the same time, though you could pick a single sample of either fromt he sample section. Can the 6 allow splits from within an engine?

Nope, still the same, each engine is monotimbral so it cannot be split (except the Organ lower/upper); you may read NE6 manual and see yourself this and more details on the instrument, if you are interested on it.

Electro 5: 2 part multi-timbral

Layers:
Organ + Piano
Organ + Sample
Piano + Sample

Splits:
Organ / Organ
Organ / Piano
Organ / Sample
Piano / Sample etc.

The NE6 can't layer the same section either unless it's organ. The big difference you can layer 2 sections either side of the split.

Electro 6: 3 part multi-timbral

Lower / Upper
Organ / Piano+Sample
Piano / Organ + Sample
Sample / Organ + Piano etc.

Plus on the NE6 you can have one section covering the whole keyboard with splits for example.

Whole Keyboard = Piano
Upper or Lower = Sample + Organ etc..

And the other difference is that you layer all 3 sections together Organ+Piano+Sample

So being able to run 3 sections simultaneously is quite a big upgrade from the NE5. Somebody mentioned somewhere that the NE6 is basically a 3 part NS3 engine.

Hope that all makes sense.
