SOLVED +++ How will the keybed of the NS3 Compact change?

Postby stageCustom » 02 May 2020, 11:08

Hi,

I'm currently testing the Stage 3 Compact: nice device. However, I'd like to understand, how the keybed will change over time.

As indication I can compare to the very soft one from Yamaha PSR-550, and to my wifes real upright piano, which is about 30 years in use. What I recognize is:

  • when I switch from the PSR to the piano, the piano's keybed feels quite heavy to operate
  • when switching from the Compact to the piano, the piano feels light to play
  • playing the compact for a longer time requires some effort over time

Well, the Compact's keybed works good for me, as the piano mechnics requires more care during operation. This is certainly also a learning phase to get used to it.

As I read, there can be a kind of "burn-in" effect, I'd just like to know, whether or not the Compact will become softer over time, simply from mechanical use.

Thanks

Don't expect much in the way of a burn-in effect on the NS3C keybed. I haven't detected any change in mine, and it's been a while.

I think you're realizing that going back and forth between weighted and unweighted keybed actions isn't the easiest thing. Most players end up with two keyboards: a weighted one below for piano work, and an unweighted one above for organ and synth.

A popular way to use the NS3C is to add a weighted controller below, with everything controlled by the Nord.
I think I have gear issues ....

Thanks for sharing.

That’s what I did. I specifically chose the NS3C because of real drawbars and waterfall keys, as I mainly play organ. But it’s not quite right for piano, so I picked up a StudioLogic SL88 Grand. I probably would’ve been fine with the SL88 Studio, but my wife requested the Grand. It’s a fantastic combination.

The action will be very robust and not change much. I've had waterfall Nord keyboards for nearly 20 years and they are very solid and persistent.
Nords: NE2, NS2 88, NS3 Compact x 2
Live rig: NS3, Vent, Radial KL-8, Shure PSM-900 IEM Rig, UE18 & UE7 IEMs.
Studio: Hammond A-101 & Leslie 122, Yamaha CP-80, Yamaha S90, NS2, DSI Prophet-6, Vent II, Roland JX-8P.
