Headphones recommended

Postby Basement29 » 17 Nov 2019, 05:49

Hello, I have just received my new Stage 3 and my JBL 305p MKII and I’m really happy.
Can you recommend a good headphone. I am looking in the forum but I cannot find which one is te reference or the most recommended.
I have read good comments about Audio Technica M50 or brands as Senheiser, but I am a little lost.

Thanks a lot.

Hi, it depends on

- which kind of headphone you are looking for: closed, semi-closed, open
- how you want to wear it: on-ear or in-ear
- which budget you are willing to spend

I am using and can recommend the AKG K-812 very much, it’s an open headphone, on-ear and produces a very clear and linear sound. It’s the best one I have owned so far in the price range below 1000 euros.

If your budget is significantly smaller than 1000 €, my recommendation are Audiotechnicas M50X best closed headphones I've personally tried.

Thanks,
Yes, 1000€ is a little high. I would put my limit around 300€.
I am reading very good reviews of the Audio Technica M50.
Any other recommendation to investigate about?

Can recommend Audio Technica. I have the ATH-M20x closed type. Cheapest in the range but very good for the money.
Light, comfortable and great sound.
I’ve also got the now discontinued ATH-AD700 for HiFi use.

I have a set of ATH-M30x, great value at a low price. Reasonably flat too.

Almost any headphones that claims to have flat response should be ok.
In that range the more You pay the better they're likely to be.

Avoid "Super bass reponse!" or similar, usually in neon colors, they are likely to be good for "untz untz" and bad at crystal clear pianos.

I have a pair of Sennheiser HD280 Pro that I love.
Surely not the best for serious studio owners, but I love the sound in them and think they're comfy.
Around 100€.

Hi !

I just purchased a Nord Stage 3 and would like to play with headphones. I aim at taking benefits of most of the sound quality of the Nord.
I'm having a hard time finding the right ones, I need your assistance.

Currently, I have a Sennheiser HD 201 which seems completely outmatched by the Nord. Event my Bose QC 35 ii sounds better. (but it's not balanced enough for the Nord imo)

I have read a lot of reviews about headphones but I'm not really sure if it'll be ok with the Nord.

So I'm currently looking at Beyerdynamics 1990 PRO. Everyone claims they are perfect and excellent value. But they are 250 ohms and some don't recommend using them without an amplifier (+400€ @_@), some say "try it" ... but it's a 480€ test x_x. Problem is, they say a "smartphone" cannot operate them, but the Nord isn't a smartphone :)
--> Has anyone played the Nord with 250 ohms headphones, without adding any amplification ? Sound quality wise, I suppose the 1990 are good, but will it work ?

If the 1990's and any 250 ohms model isn't right without amplification, what would you buy as a top quality headphone ?

Many people tend to say Sony MDR7506 is "great value", but as I have an excellent instrument, will I really be enjoying 100% of my Nord with them ? etc.

:thanks:

I am using either the Audio Technica ATH-M50X at the rehearsal room (38 ohms) or the AKG K-812 at home (36 ohms).

The AKG is nearly perfect but around 5x the price of the Audio Technica, which is also very good. I would therefore recommend to use the ATH-M50X

I use Sony MDR-V6's and occasionally a set of the 7506's. Both sound great. The only downside are the ear pads which tend to disintegrate within a few months of heavy use. I now use these soft covers which work great and add to the comfort: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?q ... 3Agarfield

I'd highly recommend putting them on from the start to prevent having to replace the ear pads.
