USB Midi to 5-pin

Postby Elias » 30 Sep 2019, 14:43

Hey all of you who know much more about synths and keyboards!

I have a Yamaha DGX-650 and it only has USB Midi out. I would want to use it as an external controller for piano sounds with other keyboards but the Stage 3 Compact(that I hopefully will own in the future) does not take in USB Midi as far as I know.

Is there any way I could connect the DGX to synths like the Stage 3 or the Roland Juno DS61 that I own at the moment?

Thanks a lot!

Hi Elias,

I think this should be able to do it: https://m-audio.com/products/view/midisport-2x2-anniversary-edition

But I think that the Stage 3 supports Midi over USB

Nope, that's for providing MIDI DIN to a computer and NS3 supports USB MIDI connection to a computer only, not to another device...

As discussed also on NUF a few times already, USB MIDI Host is needed to adapt a USB MIDI device to MIDI DIN, examples of USB MIDI Hosts boxes are the "Kenton Midi USB Host, the "Miditech Midi USB Host" or the "Mode Machines Cerebel USB" ;)

PS: unless you are OK to use a computer/tablet as a USB MIDI router, which is a 0 cost solution (of course if it is already part of your setup)

BomeBox makes an excellent USB host and is capable of performing all sorts of other cool tricks in the process. Very highly recommended!

Thats what I thought.
I think I will probably go buy one of those hosts as I don't think I want to carry around my computer just for that purpose.

Many thanks!

Ok. I'll check if I have any use for it. Otherwise I will just get a simple adapter since its going to be temporary anyway.

THIS! I cant believe this thing isnt more popular - I used to have a lot of MIDI boxes and cables for all sorts of configurations but now I just have one green box. Best investment ive made so far in my rig.
