Nord 6D>> some sounds (eg marimba) so weak

Postby bacobaco » 13 Aug 2019, 17:58

Hello!
The Marimba sound (and some other) is very weak level even if master volume and synth volume are 100%.
How to louder this synth sound? :geek:

Hi!

I would try (in the following order) to
- crank the eq,
- use the compressor,
- turn the dynamics off,
- bring all other sounds down.

Best,
Fabian

I prefer using EQ (+Gain , +Bass, +Tremble) and Comp and this way synth sounds get really nice boost.

Dude, if your band is in that desperate need of a loud marimba, maybe you should buy one and play that.

OR - tell them you are a keyboard player and please stuff their marimba request.

If loudness is your concern, what are you using for an amp(s)?
Nord Stage 3, Electro 5D, 4D, Lead 2x, Moog Voyager, Little and Slim Phatties, Kawai KG-2C 6 foot grand,

There are new Marimbas and Vibes and they are an upgrade. I would want to use them if material were appropriate also. I'm not sure telling the band to fook off is the right approach, especially since it is entirely possible it was his idea to use them not the band in the first place. I'm not Issac Stern, but there are times for some material I'd want to use, say, strings. Better to solve his volume issue and put another tool in his toolbox in my humble opinion.

Fine, but these are samples so let's not fuss over their innate level. If he wants to blast marimba from the stage, he should plug his Electro into an amplifier, or his own PA, and turn up the volume as needed.

Because if he's going into the house board and depending on some sound guy to be a) paying attention and b) sensitive to the sudden and unreasonably low level of a sampled marimba and c) ready at a heartbeat to make the on-the-fly adjustment at the house board so the audience gets a full marimba experience, and is not merely teased by the possibility that is currently lost in the wash of screeching guitars and over-struck drumheads -- he might as well be strumming a home-made lute out there.

I think Full Marimba Experience is my next band name.

But yes... I use the EQ and Compression for almost every sample to get a volume boost as well.

bacobaco, this suggestion may seem like the cure is worse than the disease, but if the marimba is really that important... and you can't re-normalize the marimba sample in a DAW, and re-import it... and the other (far better) suggestions aren't getting you where you want...

Perhaps you might adjust the gain of ALL your other Nord patches/programs (including organ and piano) down to better match your marimba's volume? Yes, your signal-to-noise ratio may take a hit, but you seem desperate for a fix. :?

This assumes that your amplification is capable of compensating for the overall reduced volume, of course. If not, then disregard.
