Limitations on PMs?

Hi,

I sent a lengthy PM to one of the forum members but this is stuck in the outbox (does not show up in the sent messages). Is there a limitation on max number of characters per message or do you know why it does not leave the outbox?

I think that the message stays in the outbox until it is read by the recipient.
