Which extra pedals after my DSI Prophet 12?

Postby Quai34 » 20 Apr 2019, 12:51

I have the TC Electeonic Stereo chorus (special edition, the black one...) plus the Helix Phaser after it....Imhave the possibility to buy at a used price (40% to 50% less that stepreet price...), around 200 CAN$, one of their big delays, the classic blue Flash back delay X4, the Vintage Alter ego X4, the black one, and the more bluish/ligh blue, Triple delay flash back delay....
1) Should I bought one of them knowing that they is already 4 delays on them? If Yes , why?
2) If the answer is yes, which one should I choose?

After the tow current pedals, the stereo output signal goes to the mixer and has an Effect send & Return to an TC M-One XL that I use Mainly for Reverb only....

Let me know what you think....?

I would look at it from a requirements, rather than a gear for gear's sake, viewpoint. What sound are you chasing that you can't achieve with your current combo? (I know you love your gear, but you asked what I think!)

Personally, everything TC sounds, to me, like a clone of somebody else's gear - Eventide for pitch, MemoryMan for delays, Lexicon for reverb (TC's 'verbs are pretty flat with not much modulation except in their more recent shimmer stuff, which is again a total clone of other people's styles). None of their stuff sounds particularly original or novel, so I don't really go for it.

I'm a big fan of Eventide's sound because it's full and lush and moves a lot - that's my personal taste showing - if they do their take on an effect its usually different in meaningful ways from the original. So as far as pedals go, a pair of H9's trumps a whole pedalboard of TC, personally - even their dedicated 'Factor pedals have such an insane variety of uses and width of application and still sound like nothing else out there at the same time. They pair super well with synths for that reason - an H9 is permanently attached to my Nord Lead 3, for instance (and usually has modulation duties such as chorus, rotary speaker, and occasionally a modulated delay/verb).

If delays are what you want, considering you already own some TC modulation, I'd strongly consider a used H9 (and max it out) or TimeFactor or Space instead of more TC - get a different sound palette in your arsenal. Or consider some of the stuff from Strymon (though I think, again, their stuff is just a nicer TC - still somewhat flat and motionless except for the fake tape hiss, but some people really like that sound) or Meris / Empress. Polymoon is really beautiful, but it only does one thing (but it does the one thing very, very well). Zoia is pretty darn awesome for what it costs, if you're looking for ultimate flexibility (although its algorithms are not the ultimate best, they'll still be on par with the TC stuff, and you can chain/modulate them in cool ways which is amazing).

Tons of options other than a whackload more of the same ordinary stuff, for not a lot more coin in most cases! Still, if you want bang for the buck, I think the best value and most amazing range of sounds available is with Eventide's gear, much of which goes used for quite a reasonable price these days. You might find "better" in very niche definitions or for very specific sound combinations in other one-purpose pedals, but you won't find such a wide range of excellent and impressively-parameterizable effects anywhere else except some of the more expensive rack units.

Well, Imuse more the delay of the Prophet 12 for special effects, belonging to the sound but nit for classic delay stuff....and the price of the used one is right....

I know about TC, what I like is it's goes well with everything, maybe because they are "too classic" and not enough "original" for you but without tweaking them a lot, they sound good....I have the H9 on my Prophet 08 and yea, it's a whole new world, sometimes too much, it changes completely the sound of the synth...
I just missed a used H9 at 350 CAN$ that could have been maxed out because my current H9 is Max out...So, thanks anyway to remind me of my first idea, an H9 after the two pedals that I already have will be awesome....but it's in a totally different price range and you don't find them used very often, compared to TC...Maybe people are bored faster with their TC than the H9 which will be understandable....
Anyway, thanks to both of you for your thoughts...
