amplifing nord drum on stage

Post by andras »

Hi everyone,

I'd like to buy an amplifier or an active monitor that I can use when playing live as I don't want to rely on all the different monitor systems at different venues, also sometimes I play in small clubs where there are no monitors, also would like to use it at my rehearsal place. Sometimes I use my Nord Drum along with acoustic drumset so I'd need some volume capacity, also something that can deliver the lows and highs. I was thinking in guitar or keyboard amps, though I know it'd colour the sound. Or should I go for an active speaker / monitor? Any advice, experience, specific modell recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

thanks, Andras

Our drummer plays through electronic drums (not Nord), and it was a challenge getting them to sound good. Forget cheap stuff, guitar amps and keyboard amps -- be prepared to spend some money and move larger cabinets.

You will want a decent speaker size (12" or more) to handle the bass, and a large amount of peak watts to handle transients. Or, alternatively, a smaller speaker size / less power coupled with a small subwoofer.

I have had success with the following setups:
2x QSC K12.2
2x QSC K8.2 + RCF sub
2x RCF TT08a + RCF sub
2x RCF EVOX J8

By the way, these configurations aren't just for the drums, they're for the whole band including drums. You may also want a small mixer.

Best of luck!
I think I have gear issues ....

What cpholis said is right on point. Using wedge monitors will probably be your best bet.

My band started off with Mackie Thumps, but they weren't the greatest. Our second set of wedge monitors are EV ELX115Ps. They're not cheap, but they sound great!

Now we all use in-ear monitors, and I think they are far superior to wedges.
