Good solution. There are a number of MIDI control surfaces that have ways to do this, but that one is nicely compact and simple. Another possibility is the M-Audio UC-33e though it's gotten hard to find and is probably more complicated... but what's nice about that one is that it also has 9 faders on it that can be used as drawbars. And, if I remember correctly, you could use its keypad either the way you describe (to call up the number of the patch you want), or you can also use those buttons to call up your favorite patches with a single keypress.
