Nord electro 5D midi to Logic Pro

Postby juliebalto » 25 Dec 2018, 00:32

I am trying to record my electro 5D into Logic Pro, have it connected with a USB midi cable, can't get any sound out of it. Any thoughts, is there a setting I need to change on the actual keyboard?

MIDI has nothing to do with audio. It is ONLY the information about what is played, when, but no sound.

It is to audio as Sheet music is to a CD.

Sheet music contains all the information about what’s on the CD, but it doesn’t contain any sound itself.

So:

If you wish to record the sounds of your Nord Electro, you will also need to connect the audio outputs to an audio interface.

If you wish to use the Electro as a controller for virtual instruments on the computer, you need to select a „virtual instrument“ track in Logic that you can then play from your keyboard.

Hi Juliebalto,

as Analogika said before, Midi only transmits COMMANDS from and to the keyboard, like which sound has to be selected, which note had to be played and so on.

If you want to record the sound from the keyboard you’d have to connect the outputs of the Electro (left and right if you’re recording stereo, or left only if you want to record mono) to the audio input of your computer, preferably using an external sound interface. In Logic you then have to create an audio track and set it’s input to the input you’ve connected the Electro to. You then can record the SOUND which is coming from the Electro.

Edit: less than a minute too late, Analogika was faster explaining the same thing

It's one of the things on my personal wishlist towards Nord - that the board would also work as a sound interface so that it would transfer also sounds over USB. :D
But it doesn't, and I guess there's less use for that in a keyboard than for example guitar pedals and small combos.

A combination idea to offer on top of what the others have already explained is to record both MIDI and sound at the same time, if You want to be able to edit post-playing.
Then You can play the edited MIDI from Logic to the 5D, and at the same time again record the (now edited) sound from the 5D back to Logic.
Gives 2 free hands to change settings and drawbars mid-playing, or just fixing the odd error in playing.
