Hi peppermint, if you want to record MIDI data only you don't need a sound card, just a standard USB cable connected to a USB port of your laptop, the same type of cable and connection you would use with a USB printer.

Important: if you are using Windows you also need to download and install the Clavia USB Drivers from Nord website (Downloads), if you are on a Mac instead you don't need any driver.

I am not an expert in Ableton but yes, it should show there i.e. in the list of available MIDI devices.

Hi

You can use the "external instrument".
It's specificaly made for that.
It manages midi and audio on the same channel.

As for the cables, as said already, Midi via USB and audio cables into your soundcard.

Hello LudovicVDP,
thank you very much. I dint know this external Instrument even :D .....
Just to understand it right:
With USB Cable i transfer the Midi and then i can record those incoming Midi into Ableton Live.
If i play those Midi in Ableton Live the Midi gets transfered to the Nord Piano and through the Speakers connectet to it,i can hear it?

Correct, but for doing it in that way (what you initially asked) you just need a Midi channel strip.

What LudovicVDP suggests, instead, requires connecting also the audio output of NS3 to the laptop (best if via a USB Soundcard rather than the laptop audio inputs) and enables to record both MIDI and audio from NS3 into Ableton.

Ok, but whats a Midi Channel Strip? Your mean this External Instrument Channel? Or the USB Cable?

Ok, then i can order:
1x https://www.conrad.de/de/delock-usb-20- ... 81030.html

What for an Audio Interface and Audio Cables for it can you please recommend?

Indeed if you connect the speakers directly to your Keyboard, no sound will enter the DAW. Which means that you will be able to receive, record and send midi notes only. When those will be sent to your keyboard, they will produce sounds and you will hear them, but you will not be able to record the sound in your daw.

If you connect the audio OUT of your keyboard to your soundcard IN and you have your speakers connected to the audio OUT of your soundcard, there you're good to go.

Tip: Go search for "Ableton External instruments" or "Ableton External synth" on Youtube, you'll find different way to have it work.
Like this, for instance:

A MIDI channel strip (track) in Ableton is what you see in the image you posted.

That cable is not what you need, you need a standard USB device cable, the same used with printers, like this one https://www.conrad.de/de/digitus-usb-20 ... 56281.html

For Audio Interfaces the choice is very wide, you need to set a budget and say if you need to record only a keyboard or maybe also voice/microphone.
