I figured this out, in case anyone else is still scratching their head like I was.
If you want to send 1 midi channel from your Daw, set the individual slot midi channels to OFF, and set the global channel.
Then if there is a performance with a slot disabled, it will not sound.
It works the opposite of what I thought.

This is normal. The Global channel plays lit slots only (as said before in this thread: it plays whatever the keyboard itself would play, on an A1 with keys). The individual slot channels will ALWAYS play their slot, whether it is lit or not.
