Perceived change in piano sound since update

Post by NordNerd431 »

I've always updated my NS3 OS regularly, but have ultimately stuck with 1.40, as it seemed the most stable. Today I upgraded to 1.60 and noticed that the piano sounds seemed different - slightly muted. Has anyone else noticed this? It's almost as if the velocity curve had been changed.

I haven't had time to thoroughly test this, but that's also my impression: the pianos have become a bit darker, less "sparkling" heights. Maybe the velocity got harder? But I do actually like this! On the NS2, I played the Silver Grand a lot. On the NS3, it always felt a bit too bright. Now with v1.60 (or was it even v1.52?) I enjoy it playing it again.

But this all could also be some weird psycho-acoustic trick my mind plays on me :-)

Maybe they finally adjust the velocity for the stage 3 to work well when played from another keyboard?

1.60 (and the 1.52) works very well for me! Whenever I need the pianos brighter at lower levels, I change to KBD TOUCH 1.

When I upgraded from 1.36 to 1.52, I believed my NS3C was an entirely new instrument: greater clarity, presence, quieter, and with a richer and fuller sound. Just my subjective opinion but I'm really enjoying this "new" keyboard. I'm guessing that the programmers might have tweaked some DSP algorithms -- as well as some other algorithms that improved the sound overall. Again, just my subjective opinion -- no proof offered. But I greatly respect their programming expertise and their willingness to constantly tweak and update the instrument. Real happy to see this change!

Changing things is fine, but it would be helpful to 1) be notified of the change and 2) be given an explanation why the change was made. Especially since some will likely submit a ticket to Nord as a potential bug.

I have noticed a slight difference, but if you want a drastic one, go straight to 1.50. Piano sound are really different in that version, I don't know, but for NS3 compact, I found them sounding better in this version 1.50 more than any others.

It feels like it’s back to how the Stage 2 reacted. Sad.

How exactly is it like the Stage 2? I don’t have any experience with that one.

Well I found the NS3 before v1.52 to be overly bright - now it's much easier to play softer while still being able to hit highest velocity with some force = more dynamic range, at least for my style of playing (I hit the keys rather hard).

To get back to the brighter sound, you can still apply some EQ or KB VEL 1 or 2..
