Noisy Piano samples in the Electro 6D

Postby Nordinary » 16 Aug 2018, 20:52

My Electro 6D was delivered and I love the organ sounds, effects and (of course) the look of the keyboard itself.

One thing that bothers me though is that a lot of the Electric Pianos in the dedicated piano section have noise and aliasing in the samples. Is this normal?

Some of the acoustic pianos also sound a bit flat and unrealistic. This was quite a surprise to me as a demo on yoo-toob made the pianos sound good when I listened through headphones, though plugging the same headphones directly into the Electro D6 makes the piano samples sound very ordinary. The samples in the Synth Sample section aren't very good either though I can always replace them :)

Which size pianos is it You don't like?
The Small versions can sound a little lo-fi.
The Medium and Large are usually ok.
But XL is very much more organic the per-key sampling.

I have a 5D, and I run the pianos with Long release and String resonance all the time (sample size allowing), as they sound a lot more alive that way.
Without those on they're a lot less fun.

I guess they all sound OK. It's just that the grand pianos don't sound very open. It's like there's too much focus on the strings and not enough of the acoustics from inside the piano body. Maybe I need better headphones :)

I wasn't wow'ed either in the beginning.
Flipping through the pianos and hearing differences, but without finding sweethearts. Preferred my Yamaha P-155 over all of them.
But after a while some of the models started to shine through in comparison, so now some of the sweethearts (which I now have as XL) are right up there with the P-155.
Depending on mood and music they now win a lot of the time.

You should download and try the Royal Grand 3D in XL. With string resonance and long release, of course. And a little reverb to taste.
Through headphones that one is really nice.
Through speakers I prefer others, but the binaural sampling in the 3D is amazing through headphones.

As @fieldflower suggests, try the Royal Grand 3D (also in XL). If you want more body, try the Velvet. If you want a more "stringy" piano but still very expressive, try the Silver (or even the Bright). They all -- to my ears -- sound pretty wonderful, each in their own way. And the better amplification you have, the better they sound...

The Royal Grand 3D is already in the 6D. It just doesn't sound as good as the online demo. Perhaps the audio interface they used in the demo added some life to the sound. I'll give the 6D another chance before deciding whether or not to keep it.

Is it the XL sample? Do You have resonance and long release on? And a little reverb?
That really makes a difference on that one through headphones.

Beware also that some piano programs have weird EQ and non-suitable reverbs and stuff that You may want to turn off.

Couldn't hurt to listen through some speakers as well so you are basing your evaluations on more than one set of headphones!

I tried it through some other headphones and things were pretty much the same so I think I'm going to return it. I really love the build quality and user interface of the Electro but the sound is just a bit too flat and restrained for me. Guess I'll keep looking :)
